B.Tech CE Design of Concrete Structures Exam

1. The document is an exam paper for a design of concrete structures course. It contains 3 sections - Section A with short answer questions, Section B with medium length design questions, and Section C with longer design questions. 2. Section B asks students to design a stair supported by beams, a column foundation, a conical dome with ring beam, and beam and column sections. 3. Section C involves designing a cantilever retaining wall, circular water tank, and trapezoidal foundation between two columns of different sizes. Students must attempt questions from each section.

SECTION A

m
1. Write in brief:

p e o
a .r c
a) List the different type of stairs.

r p
b) What are the functions of foundation in building?
c) What is the difference between columns and struts?
e

d) What do you mean by uniaxial and biaxial bending?
e) What is the reason of torsion in beam?
a p
g) What do you mean by equivalent shear?
b rp
f) Explain about intermediate and end moments in continuous beam.

h) The maximum compressive strain in concrete in axial compressive is taken as…………

i) Partial safety factor of concrete is 1.5 but why concrete stress is divided by two time of
partial safety factor?
j) What do you mean by one way and two ways shear?

SECTION B
2. Design a flight of stair is to be supported by beams on both edges. The effective span of the
stair is to be taken by 1.5m. Live load on stair is 3KN/m2. Use M20 concrete and HYSD
steel.
3. A rectangular column 300x400mm carries an axial load of 1500 KN. Design a foundation for
the column. Bearing capacity of the soil is 15t/m2. Use M30 concrete and grade of steel is
Fe415.
4. A conical dome has a base diameter of 8m. It carries a distributed load of 5KN/m2. The
height of the dome is 4m. Design also a ring beam. Use M25 concrete and grade of steel is
Fe500.
5. Design a rectangular beam 300mm wide is subjected to the following at a section. BM is
40KNm, SF is 30KN and torsion moment is 25 KN-m. Design the section and torsion
reinforcement for M25 grade of concrete and Fy 250.
6. A reinforced concrete column 500x500mm is subjected to factored axial load 1500KN and

m
factored moment of 150KN-m. Determine the reinforcement for the column. Use M20
concrete and 415 steel.

SECTION C
7. Design a cantilever retaining wall to the following requirement.
Overall height of the wall

p e
= 4m
Superimposed load from the traffic = 15KN/m2
o m
Angle of repose

p a = 30 degree
.r c
Width of the base slab

8. The circular water tank has an internal diameter is 10m. The maximum depth of the tank is
5m. The wall of the tank is restrained at the base. The tank is rest on the ground. Design a
water tank. Assume any missing data.

9. Two columns 6 m apart between centers carry loads of 1500KN and 2500KN respectively.
The sizes of the columns are 500x500mm and 700x700mm. Design a trapezoidal foundation.
Projections beyond the centre of the column parallel to the length of the foundation are 0.8m
and 1.4m. Safe bearing capacity of the soil is 300KN/m2.
