DISCUSSION METHODS OF TEACHING
INTRODUCTION:- A discussion is a form for individuals to discuss various topics amongst each others peoples add
their comments and respond.
DEFINATION:- Discussion method of teaching is a group activity involving the teacher and the student to define
the problem and seek. It’s a solution discussion method is also described as a constructive process involving
listening, thinking as well as the speaking ability of the student.

Preparation and conduct of discussion method.
STEPS:-
Orientation
Engagement
Debrief
ORIENTATION
Provide the discussion topic.
Clearly describe the topic.
Explain how students have to prepare for discussion.
Explain how the discussion will be conducted.
Encouraged the students to think.
ENGAGEMENT
Development an environment.
Present clear question to focus the discussion.
Start by asking students to define the terms.
If necessary, help the students.
Wait for each student to answer the question.

Refocus the discussion.
Keep a progressive record.
Close discussion by summarizing and evaluating.
DEBRIEF
Allow time for students to make their own notes.
Facilitate students reflection on what they learnt.
Composition of group
The group leader – one
Leader is the key person. Regulating, guiding, and classifying the discussion are the major functions of the group
leader.
The group recorder – one
The recorder makes a record of the salient features of the discussion and helps the members to correlate with
any previous discussion.
The group observer – one
The observer job is to use this record in analyzing the behavior of the group and in making suggestions as to ways
in which the group can act differently and there by improve it effectively.
The group members – 15 to 20.
To keep the discussion moving towards it’s goals; to analyze the difficulties the group may encounter in attaining
an attitude.
Levels of discussion:-
Opening up a new area of study.
Examination of the soundness of generalization.
Synthesis of data and generalization.
Application of the generalization and decision as action.
Forms of discussion : -
Discussion techniques for small groups:-
The individual conference.
Class group discussion.
Seminar.
Clinical conference.
Role play.
Discussion techniques for large groups:
Group discussion.
Symposium.
Panel discussion.

Discussion techniques for small groups: -
The individual conference:-
Individual conference is a clinical teaching method which focuses on the overall development of the individual
student with special emphasis to the development of clinical skills.
Class group discussion:-
Class group discussion in the class room is not only beneficial for students social skills, but also their educational
development and learning too.

Seminar:-
A seminar is a form of academic instruction, either at an academic institution or offered by a commercial or
professional organization. It has the function of bringing together small group for recurring meeting, focusing each
time on some particular subject, in which every one present is requested to participate.
Clinical conference:-
Clinical conferences are generally defined as scheduled events at which practicing physicians themselves present to
their colleagues interesting clinical cases, share their new experiences and learn about the latest achievements of
medical science and practice.

Role play:-
Educational technique in which people spontaneously act out problems of human relations and analyse the
enactment with help of other role players and observers.
Case analysis:-
A case analysis is a description of an actual administrative situation involving a decision to be made or a problem to
be solved. It can a real situation that actually happened just as described, or portions have been disguised for
reasons of privacy.

Discussion techniques for large groups:-
Group discussion:-
A discussion group is a group of individuals with similar interest who gather either formally or informally to bring up
ideas, solve problems or give comments. The major approaches are in person, via conference call or website.
Symposium:-
Symposium it is a technique serve as an excellent device for informing an audience discussion. The procedures is like
straight lecture form.

Panel discussion:-
Panel discussion is a discussion in which 4-8 persons. Who are qualified to talk about topics, sit and discussing a give
problem.
Principles:-
The objective should be clearly defined and understood by all participants.
The teacher should prepare carefully as a facilitator to a guide.
Question outline should be prepared carefully.
The members of the group should come prepared; have a basic knowledge about the topic to be discussed.
Leader need to guide and coordinate the proceeding so that the discussion should be kept to the point.
Records the main points of discussion.
Each one in the group should feel free to participate and a shy person should be encouraged to contribute.
Discussion should be properly ended with a report.
Advantage:-
Emphasis on learning instead of teaching.
Participate by every body.
Fostering democratic way of thinking.
Training in reflective thinking.
Training in self expression.
Made interest.
Disadvantage:-
More time and effort.
May not be end with solution.
Teacher may not be able to guide and provide true leadership.
Success of discussion is based on good preparation.
It may create emotional stress.
Not effective in decreasing procedures.
Few students may dominate in discussion.
Discussion is less efficient if the number of students exceeds twenty.

Discussion methods of teaching is a good strategies is a good strategies of a understood the students are able to
different – different method of teaching are most effective and important topic this student.
