Lesson title: Unit 6. Places in town. Asking for and giving directions

Topic: Giving directions

Lesson type: mixed (lesson of fixation of knowledge and developing skills and abilities)

Time allotted: 50 minutes

Skills: reading, speaking, listening and writing

Teaching points: grammatical: prepositions of place, Present Simple and Continuous – future
meaning
lexical: places in town,
functional: asking for and giving directions.

Learning objectives: By the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
- use the vocabulary related to places in town;
- fill in the missing words while listening a text;
- identify some places from a map;
- complete a dialogue with some key words related to the topic;
- use the prepositions of place in a given context;
- provide coherent and logical answers to the questions;
- ask and say where the places are.

Lesson aims:
- To develop students’ speaking skills;
- To develop students’ listening and comprehension skills;
- To enhance students’ knowledge about places in town and giving directions;
- To enrich students’ vocabulary related to the topic;
- to reinforce students’ confidence in their ability to use the English language;
- To provide opportunities for collaborative work.

Methods and strategies: conversation, communication, explanation, brainstorming, reflection,


guided discovery, reading aloud, scanning.
Grouping and setting: whole-class teaching, individual, in groups.

Interactions: T-S, T-SS, T-G, S-SS, G-T

Assumptions: While working in groups, students can be noisy; some may be passive.

Predicted problems:
- The listening text may contain unknown words for the students – the teacher encourages the
students to listen for the general meaning, the central message of the text; the listening text
will be played two times.
- Some students may have difficulty in solving the task – the teacher offers them help and by
working in groups may help the students to work better.
- The students may have problems with pronunciation - the teacher tells the students the right
pronunciation.
- The students do not seem to fully understand the instructions – the teacher checks the
understanding of the instructions; where it is necessary, the teacher explains the instructions
again or makes a demonstration.
