• Substances which help us to identify the
nature of a chemical by means of
certain colour changes. Eg – Litmus ,
Phenolphthalein, Methyl orange
• Olefactory indicators help us to identify
the nature of a substance by change in
odour or smell. Eg – vanilla, clove ,
onion etc.
pH Scale
• pH is defined as the negative logarithm of
the H + ion concentration of a solution
• It is a number scale ranging from 0-14 on
which the strength of an acid or base can be
expressed
• 0-7 indicates acidic and 7-14 indicates a
basic solution
• 7 indicates a neutral solution. Eg- distilled
water, glucose, sodium chloride etc
