b. Outline the important events in the development of Social Studies in America
c. Surf the internet and search for the historical background of Social Studies in
the Philippines
d. Describe and explain how social studies evolved as a major for teachers in the
primary and secondary schools
a. Between 1850 and 1910, history, civics, and geography
were all thought of as separate fields of study. They didn't
have anything in common. Economic studies were added
to the curriculum in the late 1800s, and sociology was
added in the early 20th century. As a result, the social parts
of the curriculum have grown. In 1916, the term "social
studies" was used to refer to all courses that coped with
how people interact with each other. It was in that year that
the National Education Association's Commission on
Secondary Education Reorganization backed and
explained the term's use in a report. At a discussion in
1921, the National Council for Social Studies was set up
by social studies teachers. It used to be that this term only
applied to history, economics, sociology, and civics, but
ANSWER now it covers all of these subjects and any changes or
combinations of them that are mostly social.
b. 1900 - Theorists give the basis for social studies. People
like Thomas Jesse Jones and Arthur Dunn think that civic
education should be about how to deal with the problems
that are happening now.
1916 - Students in American schools begin learning about
social studies for the first time.
1922 - Social studies textbooks are released by publishers
and also, the adoption of social studies curriculum by state
organizations and school districts demonstrates the state's
commitment to social studies.
1989 - Educators and policymakers are working together
to push for better public education programs, with a
particular focus on history and geography.
1994 - History and geography, as well as civics and
governance, and economics principles, are now part of
citizenship education that the government wants people to
learn about.
c. During the Pre-Colonial era, most children learned only
how to do things, and their parents, tribal tutors, or
community members who had certain jobs looked after
them. Stories, songs, poems, dances, medicinal practices,
and advice on how to live in a community were mostly
passed down by word of mouth. The Spaniards started
formal education, mostly through religious groups. As soon
as the Spanish missionaries came, they built schools for
the children they were going to teach. Following their study
of local languages and writing systems, they began
teaching Christianity, Spanish language, and culture to
people in the area. It was a pre-war adaption under the
Japanese Occupation, the education was more patriotic. In
1947 President Manuel Roxas revised Executive Order
No. 94 to include the Department of Education. T To
preserve beliefs and ideologies, the Philippine
Commonwealth sponsored educational
programs. Elementary students are supposed to be
"helpful, upright, and patriotic citizens," with social studies
as a vital tool. In 1954, with the mandate that "all
educational institutions are under the supervision and
subject to regulation by the State," Rizal's life, works, and
writings were mandated into all public and private school
curricula. In 1975, the Minister of Education and Culture
requested the committee to expand the primary
curriculum. The Elementary Learning Continuum (1977)
promoted basic ideas in Araling Panlipunan (Social
Studies). Ang Mamamayan, ang Institusyon at ang
Kaunlaran (Citizens, Institutions, and Development). In
1989, the secondary social studies technique was called
"social sciences." These subjects include history and
economics. In 2002, a new learning area entitled
Makabayan was created as part of the Basic Education
Curriculum changes. As defined in the Basic Education
Curriculum document, it delivers learning experiences
geared at practical knowledge and life skills, such as
empathy, occupational efficiency, and daily problem-
solving. In the K-12 curriculum, Social Studies helps
students build 21st-century skills and become functionally
literate Filipinos. People who respect social and historical
concerns are developed via social studies.
d. For a long time, there was a lot of debate about what social
studies education should be and what it should do. History
and current social issues have been the subject of much
debate about how to teach social studies in schools. Some
people want to focus on history, while others want to look
at social issues from a variety of different fields. In social
studies, we often agree that the goal is to teach students
how to be "citizens," which means teaching them how to
fully participate in democratic life. The study of social
studies has been used for a long time to spread cultural
norms, beliefs, and worldviews.
