Data Visualization Methods and Benefits

This document discusses data visualization methods, types, benefits, and provides a checklist. It describes exploratory dashboards and infographics as two main types of visualization. Exploratory dashboards allow viewers to explore the data themselves, while infographics present a story already found in the data. The benefits of visualization include processing large amounts of data quickly, understanding data better through interactivity, and examining business associations. Tools like Tableau, Sisense, and Dataplay are used for creating visualizations. A checklist is also provided to help develop high quality visualizations.

Data Visualization: Methods, Types, Benefits, and Checklist

1. Introduction

Have you ever used summary statistics, things like what's the average
height? what's the average selling? These numbers can be a useful summary of a
data set, but they can also hide detail within the data. There is a danger that relying
on summaries can lead to misleading or even incorrect answers. It's only by
visualizing the data that we're able to see the true shape of the data. According to
Geckoboard (2019), relying on summaries of tables or numbers hides the
information within the data. We need to visualize it to explore, understand, and
explain our data fully, and that is the power of data visualization.

2. Data Visualization Methods

The start of any data visualization depends on the data set and what we want
to know. Broadly speaking, there are five main questions we can ask.

● How does my one thing correspond to another?

● How is this data linked to other data?
● How is that data scattered?
● How is this data composed of, and
● How does this data appear on a map?

There are many ways to visualize our data, and the choice largely depends on our
data and what we're trying to accomplish and that's always going to be the starting
point. No matter what data we have, and what visualization we decide to use, some
general guidelines will stand in good stead.

Data can be visualized in many ways, but in this post, I want to focus on
exploratory, and infographics.
Figure 1. Example of an exploratory dashboard, Source: Matt (2016)

According to Matt (2016), in the exploratory dashboard, we visually present the

data and ask the viewer to find the story in the data. So we provided them some
filters and some actions so they can drive this dashboard to find interesting pieces
of information.

The difference between an exploratory dashboard and infographics is that an

infographic is a visualization where we've already found something interesting in a
story and we want to present it in a way to the viewer.
Figure 2. Infographics Visualization, Source: Matt (2016)

Now infographics can still be interactive by adding hover over a point and get the
values. We could decide that maybe we just want to filter in on this particular area.
But the main difference between these and exploratory dashboards is we've already
found the exciting we want to show.
3. Benefits of Data Visualization

The primary benefit of data visualization for the enterprise organization is

that it enables faster decisions to better grasp complex data, according to
Salesforce (2018), there are many benefits of worth contemplating some of the
most valuable benefits of data visualization summarized using the table below:

Table 1. Advantages of data visualization

4. Data Visualization Checklist

To develop high impact data visualization we need to use a checklist to

guide our development. Stephenie and Ann (2014) created a list of checklist
available at this link to measure data visualization quality that contains grading for
text, arrangement, color, lines, and checklists to measure the viewer's overall
attention.

5. Conclusion

Many factors will determine the final visualization that we build, but a good
starting point is always to ask yourself: what kind of question do I want to ask?
And then depending on the data, we can be sure still to make the right choice every
time we build a data visualization. Data Visualizations can be exploratory or
infographic with static or dynamic capability. Interactive visualizations often lead
to discovery and do a better job than static data tools. Interactive visualizations can
help gain great insight from big data. Interactive brushing and linking between
visualization approaches and networks or Web-based tools can facilitate the
scientific process. Using data visualization checklist will help to develop best and
intuitive result for the viewers.

Common questions

Powered by AI

When determining the appropriate method for data visualization, practitioners should consider questions such as: How does one variable correspond to another? How is this data linked to other data? How is the data scattered? What is the composition of the data? Finally, how does the data appear on a map? These guiding questions help in choosing the most suitable visualization method based on the specific characteristics and relationships inherent to the data .

Tools like Tableau and Sisense support big data environments by providing dynamic and interactive platforms for visualizing complex datasets. Tableau serves as a crucial engine for charts, graphs, and maps, allowing programmers to create nuanced visual analyses. Sisense offers impressive dashboards for interactive analysis, emphasizing simplicity and flexibility, aiding in the manipulation and examination of large data sets in real-time .

Interactive data visualization is characterized by its ability to facilitate discovery and provide deeper insights due to its dynamic nature. Users can engage with the data, explore various scenarios, and uncover patterns that static visualizations might miss. This interactivity enhances the user experience by making data more engaging and accessible, whereas static visualizations are more limited in scope and do not allow for real-time data updates or exploration .

Reliance on summary statistics can be misleading because they may obscure underlying patterns and relationships within a dataset, providing a limited view. Data visualization offers a solution by presenting a visual representation that reveals the true shape and nuances of the data, allowing for a more comprehensive understanding. Through visualization, unexpected patterns and insights can emerge that are otherwise hidden in summary statistics .

Color plays a crucial role in data visualization as it helps to differentiate data points, highlight important information, and guide the viewer's attention. Effective use of color can enhance the interpretation of data by making visualizations more engaging and readable, helping to convey complex information more intuitively. It aids in distinguishing patterns and trends that might otherwise go unnoticed in monochromatic visuals .

Data visualization drives faster decision-making by enabling stakeholders to quickly process large sets of data and identify key insights through interactive and visually engaging formats. It allows users to explore data dynamically, uncover trends and patterns, and make informed decisions based on real-time information. This immediacy helps organizations respond more swiftly to changing conditions and make strategic choices .

Exploratory dashboards allow users to interact with the data, offering filters and actions to discover stories themselves. In contrast, infographics present a pre-determined narrative or interesting findings in a static format. While infographics can include interactive elements, their primary purpose is to communicate specific insights rather than exploring unknowns, which is the focus of exploratory dashboards .

A data visualization checklist can enhance the quality of data presentations by providing structured guidance on aspects such as text clarity, arrangement, color schemes, and lines. It helps ensure that visualizations are not only aesthetically pleasing but also effective in conveying information. By systematically evaluating these elements, presenters can create more intuitive and impactful visualizations that hold the viewer's attention and communicate the intended message clearly .

Data visualization enables enterprises to process large amounts of data quickly, obtain critical data in real-time, understand data better through interactivity, examine associations among business processes and performance, and put a story within the data. These benefits are important because they enhance decision-making processes by allowing for a more thorough understanding of complex data and the relationships within it .

Challenges in using big data visualization tools include handling the volume, variety, and velocity of data that can overwhelm visualization platforms, leading to performance issues and complexity in analysis. These can be overcome by ensuring scalability in visualization tools, integrating advanced processing technologies, and using efficient data management practices to streamline data flow and reduce latency .
