LEARNING PLAN
Grade VIII
Quarter 2
Unit topic Earthquakes and Faults
Content Standard The learners demonstrate understanding of the relationship between faults
and earthquakes
Performance Standard The learners should be able to…
1. participate in decision making on where to build structures based on
knowledge of the location of active faults in the community.
2. make an emergency plan and prepare an emergency kit for use at home and
in school
Learning Competencies Using models or illustrations, explain how movements along faults generate
earthquakes
Week 1 S8ES-IIa-14
Differentiate the..
1 epicenter of an earthquake from its focus; S8ES-IIa-15
2 intensity of an earthquake from its magnitude;
3 active and inactive faults.
Explain how earthquake waves provide information about the interior of the
earth S8ES-IIc-17
Learning Targets The learners will be able to
Relate the existence of faults to the occurrence of earthquakes,
Describe how faults move.
Explore Earthquake is the shaking movement of the ground when there is sudden shifting of
slipping of blocks of rocks.
Heat from the cores raises
the temperature of the
bottom of the mantle. The
temperature of the lower
mantle becomes higher
than the temperature of
the upper mantle.
Because of the
temperature difference,
molten rocks from the
mantle bottom rise toward
the top. The rising motion
is called upwelling. Meanwhile, the cooler rocks at the upper mantle sink downward.
The complete rising and sinking cycle is a very slow process. The process is called
convection.
Temperature differences in the mantle cause convection – the rising and
sinking of molten rocks.
Duck, Cover, Hold
You duck and take cover under some sturdy furniture. You hold unto
something firm.
Firm up Activity 1
Deepen Activity 2
Prepare plan of action based on the evaluation on what to do and what not to
do when an earthquake strikes.

At the end of the unit, the learners will be required to prepare an action plan
on earthquake preparedness in school to achieve the goal of less or zero
casualty.
