Career Decision Making and the MBS Career Management Program
Every student has a different reason for wanting to do an MBA or postgraduate program at Melbourne Business School. For some, it is a necessary step to realizing a long term career goal. For others, its a personal goal that they have to complete a postgraduate business qualification. Importantly for many students, its a way of facilitating a career change. And for many students, their future career path is unclear and not defined.
The process of understanding what career path will provide you with the greatest satisfaction can be represented by the following diagram:

Decision making
Decisions about your career start with you! Only you can determine the right career for yourself. The first part of your decision making involves reflecting on you understanding who you are, what you want, whats important to you, what you are interested in, what preferences you have and what your skills are. When you have understood those things, you can explore potential careers. How do they fit your requirements and needs? Are your goals realistic? When you know these things, you will be able to define your next role or job and implement a job search strategy to obtain it. Career development is a lifelong journey. Individuals need to proactively design and manage their preferred futures. The diagram on the next page outlines a lifelong approach to career management. This folder, combined with the workshops that are run by Career Services, is based on this model and aims to provide you with the resources and tools you require to continually manage your career to ensure your career aspirations are achieved. MBS Career Consultants are skilled and experienced career coaches who are available to work with and support you in your career planning and job search and ongoing career management.

Career Management Program (CMP)
During your time at Melbourne Business School, we encourage you to participate in the Career Management Program workshops. Our program is designed to guide you through the career management process thinking about who you are and what you want to do and defining opportunities in the marketplace that will meet your needs. We also offer a comprehensive series of small workshops covering all aspects of job search, including resume writing and interview techniques. Whether you are a full time student or a part time student, the demands of the MBS academic program, work, maintaining your personal life and extracurricular activities can be overwhelming. Trying to make time in your busy schedule for your career and job search can be difficult. It is tempting to put it to the bottom of the pile. We understand competing priorities but encourage you to make time in your week for your career. Set aside regular blocks of time for your job search and you will be well positioned. Leave it to the last minute and you may find yourself struggling to realize your objective.
Change is not made without inconvenience, even from worse to better. Richard Hooker
When Should I Do the Career Management Program?
An up-to-date calendar of CMP workshops is on the Careers website. To attend a workshop, you must sign up for the session you wish to attend via the MBS website. We recommend that full time students attend all workshops in the order they are presented. Part time students can spread the workshops over the duration of their course however, if your objective is to change your current position before you complete your course, then you should complete the program in a concentrated timeframe.

Throughout the year, the Careers team will host guest speakers to present various topics of interest to support the material covered in the Career Management Program, such as: Internet Job Hunting Understanding Assessment Centres and Psychometric Testing Dealing with Recruitment Agencies Case Interview Techniques
