Column Buckling Analysis for A-36 Steel

The problem asks to determine the force P and eccentricity e needed for a W250 × 28 steel column to yield and buckle simultaneously. The column is fixed at the base and pinned at the top, allowing rotation about the y-y axis and movement along the x-x axis. Using properties of the W250 × 28 cross section and Euler's buckling formula, the critical buckling load Pcr is calculated to be 199.18 kN. This load is then used in the secant formula to calculate the eccentricity e needed for yielding about the x-x axis, found to be 175 mm.

Problem 13-66

The W250 × 28 A-36-steel column is fixed at its base. Its top is constrained to rotate about the
y–y axis and free to move along the x–x axis. Determine the force P and its eccentricity e so that
the column will yield and buckle simultaneously.

Solution:
From Appendix B, the table for Wide-Flange Sections or W Shapes SI Units, the relevant
geometric properties for a W250 × 28 section are the following:

A=3620 mm2=3.62(10−3) m2

I y =1.78 ( 106 ) mm 4=1.78 ( 10−6 ) m 4

r x =105 mm=0.105 m

d 260
c= = =130 mm=0.13 m
2 2
Buckling about the y-y axis. Since the column is fixed at the base and pinned at its top, K=0.7.
Applying Euler’s formula, and taking note that A-36 steel has E=200GPa .

π (200 ) ( 10 ) ( 1.78 ) ( 10 )
2 2 9 −6
π EIy
Pcr = 2
= 2
( KL ) y [ 0.76 ( 6 ) ]
Pcr =199.18 kN

Euler’s Formula is only valid if σ cr < σ Y . A-36 steel has σ Y =250 MPa .
Pcr 199.18 (103)
σ cr = = =55.02 MPa<σ Y =250 MPa
A −3
3.62(10 )
Hence, Euler’s Formula is valid, and the calculated load can be used.
Yielding about the x-x axis. Since the column is fixed at its base and free at its top, K x =2.
Applying the secant formula with P=P cr=199.18 kN ,

σ max=
P

rx [ √ ]]
(KL )x P
2 r x EA

Substitute numerical values then solve for e,
