Summer Series: Area Athletes Update

1) After two years in retirement, tennis star Kim Clijsters made a successful return, upsetting third-seeded Venus Williams in three sets to become the first female wild-card entry to reach the U.S. Open quarterfinals. 2) Local racer Kasey Kahne won the NASCAR Sprint Cup race in Atlanta, his second win of the year, positioning him well for the Chase for the Championship playoffs. 3) Thirty-two years ago, Yelm High School's Patsy Walker won the 1A state track and field championship entirely by herself, an unprecedented feat that is still difficult to believe given the era and lack of opportunities for female athletes at the time.
