Free-Body Diagram Problem Set 2

This document contains a 10-problem statics assignment on rigid bodies from a mechanics of materials course. The problems involve drawing free-body diagrams of structures under various loading conditions and determining reactions at supports. The format requirements for problem set submissions are also outlined, specifying the paper size, required cover page information, note on handwriting and signatures, and file naming convention for soft copy submissions.

ES 11 – STATICS OF RIGID BODIES

PROBLEM SET NO. 2

CHAPTER 3

A. Answer the following problems.

1. Draw the free-body diagram of the hand punch which is pinned at A and bears down
on smooth surfaces at B. Given: F=8 KN, a=1.5 m, b=0.2m and c=2 m.

2. Draw the free-body diagram of the beam supported at A by a fixed support and at B
by a roller. Given: W=40 KN.m, a=3 m, b=4 m, and 𝜃=30°.

3. Draw the free-body diagram of the jib crane AB, which is pin-connected at A and
supported by member (link) BC. Given: F=8 KN, a=3 m, b=4 m, c=0.4 m, d=3 m, and
e=4 m.

4. The frame shown is supported in pivots at A & B. Each member weighs 50 lb per ft.
Draw a FBD of each member.
5. Draw a FBD of pulleys E & D of the bar AD shown. Assume all hinges to be smooth &
neglect the weight of each bar

6. Determine the reactions for the beam shown.

7. Determine the reactions for the beam loaded as shown.

8. Determine the amount and direction of the smallest force P required to start the wheel
over block. What is the reaction at the block?

9. Two cylinders A and B, weighing 100 lb and 200 lb respectively, are connected by a
rigid rod curved parallel to the smooth cylindrical surface shown. Determine the
angles ∝ and 𝜃 that defined the position of equilibrium.
10. For the system of pulleys shown, determine the ratio of W to P to maintain equilibrium.
Neglect axle friction and the weights of the pulleys.
