Have you tried using it? *student answers varies*

How about the others? (student raise hand)

Who among you already saw a (student raise hand)
sewing machine?

Good. Can anyone of you

describe a sewing machine? Ma’am

Yes Ericka A sewing machine is a machine used to sew

fabric and other materials together with
thread. And make our work faster and
accurate ma’am.
You got it class did you know that
Sewing machines were invented
during the first Industrial
Revolution to decrease the amount
of manual sewing work performed
in clothing companies. Since the
invention of the first working
sewing machine, generally
considered to have been the work
of Englishman Thomas Saint in
1790.

h. Lesson Proper: Lecture-

Discussion
Today, we are going to learn
about the different types of
sewing machine. There are 7
types of sewing machine. Kindly
read the first one Mr. Danseal.
(teacher will flash her power
point presentation) 1. Lockstitch Sewing Machine. This is
usually used in homes and sometimes in
school. This is also called “Domestic
Sewing Machine”. It is run by foot and
may also be converted to electric
This is a picture of a lockstitch
sewing machine class.

Just as in a chain-stitch machine,

the needle pulls a loop of thread
through the fabric, rises again as
the feed dogs move the fabric
along, and then pushes another
loop in. But instead of joining the
different loops together, the
stitching mechanism joins them to
another length of thread that
unspools from the bobbin.

Now class, why do you think it’s

called “Domestic Sewing
Machine” *Student’s answer may varies*

Yes. Because it’s typically made

for personal and home use. It is one
of the oldest sewing machine. And
simple to use machine.

No. 2 is Hi-Speed Lockstitch 2. Hi-Speed Lockstitch Sewing Machine.

Sewing Machine This is sometimes called ”straight
stitching machine” or “industrial sewing
machine.” It has automatic lubrication
This is a picture of hi speed and is used by tailors and dressmakers
lockstitch sewing machine class.

A hi-speed lockstitch sewing

machine is the best common
mechanical system stitch made by
the sewing machine. The term of
single needle stitching often found
on dress shirt labels, referring to
lockstitch machine.

Are there question you would like to

ask? Ma’am, what’s the difference between
Lockstitch sewing machine and Hi-speed
lock stitch sewing machine?
Good question! The lockstitch
sewing machine uses a oscillating
bobbin and a slower, less powerful
motor. The Hi-speed lockstitch
sewing machine uses a rotating
bobbin that rotates as fast as the
high-speed motor does. Therefore,
the difference between the two is
that hi-speed sewing machine is
faster to use than lockstitch sewing
machine.
Let’s proceed.. 3. Over Edging Machine. Other
companies call it “small machine”. It
finishes the raw edges of the pattern for
construction.

This is an over lock is a kind of stitch

that sews over the edge of one or two
pieces of cloth for edging, hemming,
or seaming. Usually an over lock
sewing machine will cut the edges of
the cloth as they are fed through (such
machines being called sergers in North
America), though some are made
without cutters.

Now class I have a question. What can

you use instead of serger or if you
don’t have any serger at home? *Student answer varies*

Yes. You can use zig-zag stitch, zig

zag stitch is commonly used seam
finish, particularly for thick or bulky
fabrics. If you have no serger you can
often quickly sew seam finished with a
zigzag.

Another kind of sewing machine is 4. Embroidery Machine. This is used in

Embroidery Machine making fancy stitches and in making
different kinds of embroidery stitches on
fabrics for the Barong Tagalog, pillow
cases, linen, and other novelty items.

This is an embroidery machine class.

Machine embroidery is an embroidery
process whereby a sewing machine or
embroidery machine is used to create
patterns on textiles. It is used
commercially in product branding,
corporate advertising, and uniform
adornment. It is also used in the fashion
industry to decorate garments and
apparel.

Before we proceed to the next one, I

have a question class. What does
embroidery machine create on textiles? Ma’am

Yes Staychi. It create patterns on textile ma’am

Correct! Machine embroidery is an

embroidery process whereby a sewing
machine or embroidery machine is
used to create patterns on textiles.
Okay let’s move on to the next slide. 5. Button Holer Machine. This is used in
making buttonholes on garments. A
buttonholer is an attachment for a
sewing machine which automates the
side-to-side and forwards-and
backwards motions involved in sewing
a buttonhole.
Just remember class this machine is
use to make a buttonhole it is most
accurate than the traditional way of
making button hole.

Class, what do you think is the

advantage of using a buttonholer
machine? *Student’s answer varies*

Yes. Correct!
It’s advantage is it’s feature is great
because the foot measures the actual
size of your button each time t sews
a buttonhole.

Now, the next type of sewing 6. Button Attachment Machine. This is

machine is.. used in attaching buttons to the
garments. Button sewing machine is a
special type of machine which is used in
apparel industries to attach button so it is
called button attaching machine.

In garment sewing, button attaching

machines is used because huge amount
of apparel is made here. Attaching or
sewing button by hand is time
consuming. That’s why button
attaching machine is used in garment
industry.
A button attacking machine is used to
sew the button in the garment without
damaging it.

Class, why is it that the big companies

or garment industry used button
attaching machines? *Student’s answer varies*

Good. Because this are big companies,

meaning they hold a big clothing line.
If you sew button by hand it is time
consuming, that’s why they used
button attaching machines because it
save a lot of time.

Now let’s proceed 7. Bartacking Machine. This is used in

reinforcing the opening and closing of
pockets.

This is a bartacking machine class.

Bartacking is a type of reinforcement
stitching that is done using a Bartack
machine. The Bartack sewing
machine stitch is a tight zigzag
pattern repeated perpendicularly over
itself several times to make sewn
products stronger, and resistant to
tears or rips in the seams.

That are the different types of sewing

machine class. That is very useful to
make our work done finest and
accurate and make our work easy and
make us productively the rice is quiet
expensive but as a dress maker it is
valuable to have one of this.

i. Generalization:
Okay do you have any question
regarding our discussion? *Student’s answer varies*

Okay it seems you all really

understand, so to sum it up can you
give me the equipment that is
important in sewing activities? Ma’am its sewing machine.

Very good, please enumerate the

types of sewing machines that we
discuss?
(calls a student) 1. Lockstitch sewing machine
[Link]-speed lock stitch sewing machine
[Link] edging machine
[Link] machine
5. Button Holer machine
6. Button attachment machine
[Link] Machine

Excellent!
j. Values Integration
Sewing machine makes life
easier, it made sewing an easy
and fast process. It had cut the
working time necessary for
sewing a great extent.

Class, what do you think is

importance of sewing machine in
our life? *Student’s answer varies*

Yes. Sewing machine greatly

impacts our society because it is
the product used to manufacture
the clothing that we wear and
fabrics that influence beauty of
our physically outward needs and
wants.

And, what do you think is the

benefit we get from sewing? *Student’s answer varies*

Yes, there are a lot of benefits we

get from sewing:
- It reduces stress
- Improve hand eye
coordinator
- Brain growth
- Happiness
- It fights dementia
Now a day, we have a lot of types
of sewing machine we used these
sewing machines to make our
work faster and easy.
Sewing opens our mind
creatively to unlimited
possibilities for repurposing
almost anything made from
fabric.

Bartacking Machines contribute to the durability of garments by providing reinforced stitching in areas subjected to high tension or stress, such as pocket openings, belt loops, and the ends of zippers . These machines use a tight zigzag pattern to repeatedly stitch over seams, ensuring garment strength and resistance to tears, enhancing the overall durability of finished products .

In large-scale garment manufacturing, sewing machines play a crucial role in enhancing efficiency and productivity by automating labor-intensive processes. Specific machines utilized include Hi-Speed Lockstitch Sewing Machines, which allow fast and consistent stitching , and Button Attachment Machines, which significantly reduce the time required to attach buttons compared to hand sewing . These machines enable companies to maintain high output levels while ensuring the quality and consistency of garments.

A Buttonholer Machine improves accuracy compared to traditional manual techniques by automating the side-to-side and forward-backward motions required to sew a buttonhole . It measures the actual size of the button each time it sews, ensuring precise and consistent buttonholes across garments, which is difficult to achieve manually .

The key differences between a Lockstitch Sewing Machine and a Hi-Speed Lockstitch Sewing Machine involve their speed and mechanisms. The Lockstitch Sewing Machine uses an oscillating bobbin and a slower motor, typically designed for personal and home use . In contrast, the Hi-Speed Lockstitch Sewing Machine, often used in industrial applications, has a rotating bobbin and a high-speed motor, making it faster and more suited for professional garment production .

Over Edging Machines, also known as sergers in North America, differ from conventional sewing machines in that they sew over the edge of fabric pieces for finishing purposes, such as edging, hemming, or seaming . Unlike standard sewing machines that typically create a straight seam, over edging machines often include cutters that trim fabric edges as they sew, creating a neat finish .

Sewing machines have significant societal and individual benefits. Societally, they are instrumental in mass production of clothing, greatly impacting the textile industry by reducing labor costs and increasing efficiency. Individually, they allow for personal creativity and self-expression through custom garment creation. They also provide practical benefits such as saving time and encouraging skills development in pattern reading and design . The impact of sewing machines extends to reducing stress, improving hand-eye coordination, promoting brain growth, and providing a sense of accomplishment .

The significance of the Embroidery Machine in commercial applications lies in its ability to create intricate embroidery patterns used for product branding, corporate advertising, and uniform adornment. Unlike basic sewing machines, the Embroidery Machine is specifically designed for decorative stitching, allowing it to produce complex designs on textiles efficiently . This capability is pivotal in the fashion industry and other sectors requiring textile customization.

Sewing machines contribute to individual skill development beyond their practical application by fostering creativity, improving hand-eye coordination, and promoting cognitive growth. For instance, engaging in sewing can help reduce stress and fight dementia through consistent mental engagement . Sewing activities encourage problem-solving and pattern recognition as individuals design and create garments or decorations.

A significant breakthrough in sewing machine evolution during the first Industrial Revolution was the invention of the first working sewing machine. This development is generally attributed to Englishman Thomas Saint in 1790, who aimed to decrease the manual labor involved in sewing within clothing companies .

If a serger is not available, an alternative seam finishing method is the zigzag stitch, which is commonly used for thick or bulky fabrics. This method provides a quick seam finish that helps prevent fraying . While not as polished as serging, the zigzag stitch offers a viable solution for home sewing enthusiasts, allowing flexibility in finishing seams without specialized equipment.
