Leadership, and take the 20-minute leadership skills assessment. What did you learn about
yourself? What are some major areas for you to improve upon before you take a leadership
position in a career?
Upon taking the skills assessment I learned several things about myself. One is that I have a
participative leadership aspect. I like to accept input from one or more group members when
making decisions. I believe this is very true of me. I understand that I will look at a problem one
way, and someone else will look at it in a different way—but my way may not be the best way.
This style of leadership usually tends to make group members motivated and encourage because
they are part of the decisions. The main benefit of this kind of leadership is the understanding
that no leader can be an expert in all areas. Because others are allowed to make suggestions more
accurate and effective decisions will be made. This style of leadership is also closely tied to
delegative leadership, which emphasizes group members making decisions. Qualified employees
are important to the success of this style. Again no leader can be an expert in all situations, which
is why it is important to be able to delegate certain tasks out to knowledgeable and trustworthy
employees.
Good leaders should be able to utilize three main styles depending on the situation. I seem to
have a good grasp of the participative style and delegative style, however I seem to lack in the
authoritarian style. One of the things to work on is being able to use an authoritarian style. An
important part of this style is the ability to make decisions quickly when there is not enough time
to ask a group of people. I tend to want to discuss problems before taking action, so it is
something I must work on. The main benefits for this style are its quick action aspect, having a
clear leader who takes charge of the groups, and the ability to set firm, timely deadlines. I would
be able to set deadlines, however I would prefer to empower employees to make their own
decisions and to have more equal level view, so that discussion and communication could take
place. So that I one other thing I will need to work on.
