AC Power Analysis and Calculations

This document provides solutions to 5 questions about AC power calculations. The first question calculates the impedance, current, real power, reactive power, apparent power, and power factor of a solenoid coil connected to a 230V AC supply. The second question calculates the impedance of a two-terminal load. The third question calculates the real and reactive power losses in a transmission line, as well as the real and reactive power supplied by the source. The fourth question calculates the resistance and inductance of a load drawing 1200 + j800 VA from a 440V, 60Hz source.

Solution: AC Power

Question 2.
A solenoid coil with a resistance of 30 ohms and an inductance of
200mH is connected to a 230V(rms)AC, 50Hz supply. Calculate:
(a) solenoids impedance
(b) current consumed by the solenoid
(c) real, reactive and apparent power
(d) power factor
For the part a & b only find the magnitudes of the quantities
Solution:
a) Impedance (Z) of the solenoid coil
𝑍 = 𝑅 + 𝑗𝑋𝐿
𝑋𝐿 = 2𝜋𝑓𝐿 = 2𝜋 ∗ 50 ∗ 200𝑚 = 62.8 𝛺
𝑍 = 30 + 𝑗62.8
|𝒁| = 𝟔𝟗. 𝟔 𝜴

b) Current consumed by the solenoid

𝑉 230
𝐼=𝑍= = 3.3 A (rms)
69.6

c) 𝑃 = 𝐼 2 𝑅 = 3.32 (30) = 𝟑𝟐𝟕 𝑾

𝑄 = 𝐼 2 𝑋 = 3.32 (62.8) = 𝟔𝟖𝟒 𝑽𝑨𝒓
𝑆 = 𝐼 2 𝑍 = 3.32 (69.6) = 𝟕𝟓𝟖 𝑽𝑨

𝑃 327
d) 𝑃𝑓 = = = 𝟎. 𝟒𝟑 𝒍𝒂𝒈𝒈𝒊𝒏𝒈
𝑆 758

Question 3.
Find the impedance of a two-terminal load under the following conditions.

Solution:
𝑉 120 ∠ 30
a) 𝑍 = = = 𝟔∠ − 𝟒𝟓 𝜴 𝑜𝑟 𝟒. 𝟐𝟒 – 𝒋𝟒. 𝟐𝟒𝜴
𝐼 20 ∠ 75

b) We know 𝒁 = (𝑷 + 𝒋𝑸)/𝑰𝟐
To find P
Solution: AC Power

|𝑆| = √𝑃2 + 𝑄 2

𝑃 = √ 3.3𝐾 2 − 1.8𝐾 2 = 2.76K

Now
2.76𝐾− 𝑗 1.8𝐾
𝑍= = 𝟒𝟗 − 𝒋𝟑𝟐𝜴
7.52

Question 4:
An industrial load requires 40 kW at 0.84 pf lagging. The load
voltage is at 220V rms, 60 Hz. The transmission-line
impedance ZW, is 0.1+ j0.25 Ω. Determine
(a) the real and reactive power losses in the line.
(b) the real and reactive power supplied by the source

Solution:
(a) To determine the losses, we need to calculator IL.
We know P= VIcos∅ and pf = cos∅ so,

𝐼𝐿 = 𝑃/𝑉𝑐𝑜𝑠∅ = 40K/220x0.84 = 216.5A (rms)

Real power losses will correspond to the resistive part of ZW and reactive losses will
correspond to reactive part of ZW

𝑃𝑙𝑜𝑠𝑠𝑒𝑠 = (0.1)𝐼𝐿 = 𝟒. 𝟔𝟕𝑲𝑾
2
𝑄𝑙𝑜𝑠𝑠𝑒𝑠 = (0.25)𝐼𝐿 = 𝟏𝟏. 𝟕𝑲𝑽𝑨𝒓

(b) The total power supplied will be power delivered to load + the power lost in line.

𝑃𝑠 = 𝑃𝑙𝑜𝑠𝑠𝑒𝑠 + 𝑃𝑙𝑜𝑎𝑑
𝑃𝑠 = 4.6 + 40 𝐾𝑊 = 𝟒𝟒. 𝟔𝑲𝑾

𝑄𝑠 = 𝑄𝑙𝑜𝑠𝑠𝑒𝑠 + 𝑄𝑙𝑜𝑎𝑑
Q= VIsin∅
∅= cos-1 (0.84) = 32.86°
Q= (220x216.5)xsin(32.86) = 25.5KVAr
𝑄𝑠 = 11.7 + 25.9 𝐾𝑉𝐴𝑟 = 37.6 KVAr

Question 5:
A load made up of a resistor R in series with an inductor L draws a complex power of 1200 +
j800 VA when connected across a 440-V (rms), 60-Hz voltage source. Find the value of the
value of R and L.
Solution: AC Power

Solution:
|𝑆| = 𝑉𝐼

2 2
𝐼 = √(1200 + 800 ) / 440 = 3.28 A (rms)

𝑃 1200
𝑅 = 2
= = 𝟏𝟏𝟏. 𝟓𝛀
𝐼 3.282
𝑄 800
𝑋𝐿 = 2 = = 74.4Ω
𝐼 3.282

𝐿 74.4
𝐿 = 2𝜋𝑓 = 2𝜋(60) = 0.197H
