The Good Life: Science, Technology, and Ethics

This document discusses various topics related to technology and the good life. It begins by discussing Aristotle's view that a good life involves cultivating rational thinking through activities like scientific inquiry. It then notes that while technology impacts lives and fuels scientific progress, it does not guarantee a good life on its own. Later answers note that while technology can make lives easier, its necessity depends on context, and that it faces dilemmas like privacy issues that require attention. The document expresses beliefs that technological advances ultimately may not lead to meaning, and cites online classes as an example of technology affecting daily life through required use rather than choice.

1. What is the good life?

- According to Aristotle, a good life is one in which a person cultivates and exercises
their rational faculties by, for instance, engaging in scientific inquiry, philosophical
discussion, artistic creation, or legislation.

2. What is the relationship between the good life and science?

- Everyone says that good life is the result of Science. Though good life and science are
interdependent, they affect each other just like the concept of cause and effect. Science
and its researches and invention have a great impact on human life, precisely the good
life. And it is the pursuit of a good life that fuels the passion for scientific development in
the world. Both of them can be used as cause and effect alternatively according to a
scientific situation. For instance

3. Does technology always lead us to the good life? How and why?
- Just like my answer in number 3, science and its research and technology doesn’t
guarantee a good life. It is interdependent with each other.

4. Do people really need technology in their lives? Is it really a necessity?

- There is no doubt that technology makes people’s lives easier. But my take on this is
the necessity of technology varies from one lifestyle, environment, and place. If you are
living in urbanized areas of the world that trades from a technological device to another,
then yes, technology is a necessity. In the modern world, everything seems so
fast-paced but in order to survive, no matter how gradual it is, one needs to go with the
flow.

5. How do you reconcile the 'need' for technology and the dilemma/s it faces?
- I believe one of the dilemmas technology faces revolves around cyberspace such as
violation of intellectual property rights, data privacy, in short, ethical issues. While it has
to be addressed to avoid further serious damage, it shouldn’t be compromised to the
extreme need for technology. Being literate on the internet is quite vital thus letting
yourself be aware of the limitations the internet provides.

6. Should there be an ethics of technology?

- Ethically speaking, yes. Technology has to have ethics to prevent abuse, wicked
manipulation, and accountability purposes. Also, it is to know the limitations while
studying thoroughly the advancement to avoid future predicaments.
7. Is having a good life is also having a truth?
- Depends if your morality is an integral part of your life. If yes, then the key to a good
life is residing with the truth. Otherwise, you will be having sleepless nights, lack of
peace of mind, and gnawing guilt.

8. What are your beliefs about?

- That we are living in the world, struggling to find some happiness on trivial things,
searching for things to value even though it’s fleeting, looking for our purpose and
meaning of our lives, trying to discover ourselves, better ourselves, only to find out that
all of these has no meaning and the world will continue to revolve, the universe doesn’t
concern us, that we’re mere specks who are living rent-free in this world and we will
soon die. All these technological advancements for a “good life” and to make our lives
easier meant nothing.

9. What kind of technology do you usually use?

- Basic technological devices such as cellular phones, computers, the internet, etc., that
you will find “necessity” in the modern world.

10. Does technology has to affect your daily life? Cite an example.
- Yes. To cite an example, this ongoing online class. It has affected my daily life as if
looking through our devices isn’t for leisure and entertainment purposes anymore. It is
not serving as means of communication anymore. It has become obligatory and a
requirement for us to struggle for an education we rightfully deserve but poorly receive.

Do the Activities below.

1. Good Life Collage. Cut out pictures in magazines or newspapers that demonstrate
how technology has made man's desire for a happy life more realizable. You may also
opt to print out pictures from websites and other sources. Explain how these
technological advancements have made the campaign for the attainment of good life
easier or otherwise.

2. Compare and Contrast. Identify two modes of doing the same thing where one
involves a more technologically advanced method. An example would be snail mail vs.
e-mail. List down as many examples. Brainstorm with a partner if a less technologically
sophisticated mechanism can turn out to be better in terms of reaching for the good life.
Is the more technologically advanced always better?

● Kodak Camera VS. A Smartphone

● Typewriters VS. Laptops
● Telephones VS. A Smartphone
● CD’s/Floppy disks VS. Flash drives
● ATMs VS. Digital wallets
● Walkmans VS. Ipods/A Smartphone

-I would argue that the debatable part is “always”, but it has guaranteed faster, easier,
and better ways to improve and enhance the daily lives of humanity. As I understand
that the technological
advancement and the effect of how we use it are both interdependent things that may
we can relate to cause and effect. Of course, there are good things that we get like what
I said above but we can frankly say that there is also negative effect.

3. Cite your opinion in a video. Choose from the suggested topic that makes interests
you and discuss it (a five-minute video will do).
Suggested topics:
a . Do technological devices bring more good than bad to people?
b. Should there be more budget for technological research despite the dilemmas they
are currently
facing?
c. Should there be a limit to technological advancements?

2. Group Script. Each group should choose a unique topic and its perceived effects and
the dilemma it entails. Show your stand on a technological dilemma through a script. Do
not forget to show the role or roles played by technological advancement in the lives of
the people.
Suggested topics:
a. Robots that are capable of having emotions
b. Google and stupidity
c. Filipinos' addiction to different technologies
d. Waze application
