Thermal Clearance Calculation Guide

The document describes calculations for determining required clearances in mechanical systems accounting for thermal expansion. It provides the design temperature, length from the baseline, coefficient of thermal expansion per an industry standard, temperature difference, calculated required clearance, actual clearance provided, and confirms the actual clearance is acceptable in each case.

Clearance Calculation

Design temperature Td = 100 °C

(Design temperature has been considered to avoid any change in later stages)

Length from B.T.L. L = 1900 mm

Coefficient of Thermal Expansion α = As per Table TE-1 of ASME Section II Part D

= 12.1 mm / mm / °C

Difference in temperature ΔƟ = |Td - 20|

= 80 °C

Clearance Q = L x α x ΔƟ + 1
= 2.84 mm

Actual clearance provided Qa = 3 mm

Hence acceptable

(Design temperature has been considered to avoid any change in later stages)

Length from B.T.L. L = 2100 mm

Coefficient of Thermal Expansion α = As per Table TE-1 of ASME Section II Part D

= 12.9 mm / mm / °C

Difference in temperature ΔƟ = |Td - 20|

= 225 °C

Clearance Q = L x α x ΔƟ + 1
= 7.1 mm

Actual clearance provided Qa = 8 mm

Hence acceptable
