Topic: Safety Standards
Objective: The main objective is to accomplish a safety and health program to decrease the
number of injuries and illnesses. Conducting a safety and health inspection program to identify
and eradicate dangerous working conditions or practices, regulate health hazards, and ensure
compliance with local, state, and federal standards.
Important Information:
Major cause of Accidents
1. Fire and Explosions
2. Falls
3. Harmful Substances & Environment
4. Contact with Objects and Equipment
5. Heat
6. Radiation
Basic Safety Rule in using Hand Tools
1. Use the right tool for the job.
2. Keep all tools in good condition with regular maintenance.
3. Examine each tool for damage before use and do not use damaged tools.
4. Operate tools according to the manufacturers’ instruction.
5. Provide or use properly the right personal protective equipment.
Hand tools made of iron or steel may generate sparks that might act as an ignition source in the
vicinity of a flammable material.
Saw blades, knives, and other tools should be directed away from the aisle area and away from
other employees working nearby.
Knives and scissors must be sharp; dull tools can cause more hazards than sharp ones.
Drift pins, wedges, and chisel must be kept clear of mushroomed heads. Tool handles made of
wood must not be splintered.
If a wooden handle on a tool, such as a hammer, becomes loose, splintered, or cracked, the tool's
head may fly off and injure the user or other workers.
Steps on staying safe while using power tools
1. Keep floors dry and clean to avoid slipping while working with or around dangerous
power tools.
2. Ensure cords aren’t a tripping hazard.
3. Examine tools and cords for damage before use.
4. Use tools that are double-insulated or have a three-pronged cord and are plugged into a
ground receptable.
5. Do not use electric tools in wet conditions unless they are approved for that use.
6. Do not exceed the design limitation of the tool.
7. Use a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) or an assured grounding program.
Electric shocks, which may cause injuries such as heart attacks and burns, are one of the most
serious risks linked with power equipment. Even a modest quantity of electric current can cause
arterial fibrillation (AFlib) and death under certain settings. People can be injured if they fall
from ladders or other elevated work surfaces as a result of an electric shock.
Electric power tools can take a small project and turn it into a big problem if the right safety
measures aren’t taken.
Questions: Which among the six major cause of accidents happens a lot? What will happen to
you if ever you enter in construction site without a proper protective equipment?
Discuss the importance: Slips, trips and falls is the accidents happens a lot because of loose
cables, building equipment and holes in the ground.
Accidents are common in the construction industry owing to a lack of or insufficient usage of
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). PPE is equipment that protects employees from
occupational health and safety hazards and decreases employee exposure to hazards.
In order to reduce the risk of having injuries if ever there are accidents, we must use a PPE or
Personal Protective Equipment or Safety Equipment’s such as safety hat, safety glasses and full-
face shield, ear muffs, gloves, safety-toe shoes / rubber boots, safety clothes or working clothes.
Safety rules are in place to protect the people of our community. They protect all of us. Many
safety regulations were implemented because of a condition that led to someone getting seriously
injured or killed.
Questions:
Why does the slips, trips and falls is the most common accidents in a construction site?
a. Because of loose cables, building equipment and holes in the ground can be
commonplace in construction sites.
b. Because construction work requires the use of heavy machinery and equipment such as
jackhammers, bulldozers, nail guns, drills, and cranes, all of which can cause serious
bodily injury.
c. Because of improper maintenance or grounding of the equipment, unsafe operations
around power lines and conductors, overloaded circuits, or exposed electrical parts or
improper wiring.
What are the reasons why workers are not wearing complete PPE?
a. Discomfort
b. Unattractive
c. Ill-fitting
d. All of the above
What is the color of the laborer’s hard hat?
a. White
b. Red
c. Yellow
d. Blue
