Abstract

This project aims the elaboration of a proposal of Marketing Plan for the Interactive
Museum of the Chocolate Factory, located in Viana do Castelo. Integrated in a multifunctional
space, this museum is part of the Chocolate Factory project, inaugurated in June 2014, and is
also composed of a Hotel, Restaurant, Choco Therapy Office (chocolate massages) and a Shop.
This is the first museum in Portugal with a theme focused on chocolate, but at the same
time, it was built in the old facilities of the Avianense chocolate factory, an example of reuse in
the area of industrial heritage.
In methodological terms, this Marketing Plan was based on the analysis and collection of
qualitative and quantitative data, divided into two chapters. The first one comprised the
theoretical framework of the theme addressing some relevant concepts. In the second, the focus
was on the elaboration of the Marketing Plan after an internal and external analysis (SWOT) of the
Museum, definition of the objectives and respective strategies and a application of a
questionnaire to 100 people that allowed to draw the profile of its visitors and obtain more
specific information about the experience. At the same time, two maps of experience were
elaborated, focused on the visitors (hotel guests and external visitors).
It was possible to conclude that the local population has a very low visit rate, and this is
may be a consequence of the lesser bet on offline promotion media. However, through the
questionnaires applied to the visitors, it was verified that the levels of satisfaction with the
experience was very positive, since 99% would recommend the Museum and 84% would visit
again. However, it was possible to identify that the higher price compared to other public
museums may present as an obstacle. Finally, the dynamization of the 3rd and 4th museum
room and a greater focus on exhibition objects could bring to this space even greater interest and
authenticity with the capacity to satisfy the most varied age groups.

The Interactive Museum of the Chocolate Factory's multifunctional space includes a hotel, restaurant, Choco Therapy Office (offering chocolate massages), and a shop, alongside the museum itself. These components contribute to an immersive visitor experience by integrating leisure, dining, wellness, and shopping into the museum visit, making it a holistic and appealing destination .

The reuse of the Avianense chocolate factory building as the site for the museum adds historical and cultural depth to the visitor experience. It serves as an example of industrial heritage, providing authenticity and a connection to Portugal's history of chocolate production, and supports the museum's thematic focus on chocolate .

Industrial heritage enriches the museum experience by providing depth and authenticity, enabling visitors to connect with the historical narrative of chocolate production. This aspect can be highlighted in marketing efforts to attract visitors interested in cultural and historical contexts, thus enhancing the overall appeal of the museum .

The museum faces challenges in attracting local visitors, which may be due to the limited use of offline promotion channels. Strategies to address this could include enhancing local partnerships, increasing offline marketing efforts such as local media promotions, community events, and offering promotions or discounts specifically for local residents .

Experience maps play a critical role in understanding visitor profiles and tailoring the museum's offerings to enhance satisfaction. They inform the marketing strategy by identifying the needs and preferences of different visitor segments, such as hotel guests and external visitors, thereby improving targeted marketing and product offerings .

Increasing use of offline promotional media, such as local advertisements, flyers, and partnerships with community organizations, can raise awareness and attract more local visitors by making the museum more visible and accessible to the community. This approach can create a stronger local presence and drive visitation .

The museum distinguishes itself by being Portugal's first theme-oriented museum focusing on chocolate, situated in a site rich with industrial heritage. This unique combination of theme and historical context sets it apart from other museums and enhances its cultural and educational value .

Higher admission prices compared to other public museums can deter visits, despite high satisfaction levels where 99% of visitors would recommend the museum and 84% would return. This indicates that while the experience is valued, the pricing strategy needs to balance cost with perceived value to enhance affordability and accessibility .

Survey responses indicating a 99% recommendation rate and an 84% revisit intention confirm overall satisfaction but highlight pricing as a barrier. Improving the marketing plan may involve leveraging the high satisfaction rates in promotional materials while addressing pricing concerns through strategic discounting or value-added packages .

Enhancing the 3rd and 4th rooms with dynamic exhibits focused on diverse themes and interactive elements can increase the museum's appeal. This approach could cater to a wide range of interests and learning styles, providing more engaging and memorable experiences for visitors of all ages .
