Bending Moment and Shear Force Analysis

This document contains an engineering mechanics assignment with three questions regarding internal forces (shear and bending moment) for beams and rigid frames. Students are asked to draw shear and bending moment diagrams, determine maximum bending moments, and derive equations for shear and bending moment at different points along cantilevers and beams. Relevant diagrams are provided and students are expected to show their working clearly.

EQUILIBRIUM EQUATIONS

Sum of Vertical Forces

(Reactions Ay and By assumed positive upward)
Ay+ By= 0.5(12,000.00 N/m) × 3.00 m + 0.5(12,000.00 N/m) × 3.00 m + 5,000.00 N

Sum of Moments about A (Right hand rule sign convention)

(6.00 m) By= 0.5(12,000.00 N/m)(3.00 m)(2.00 m) + (12,000.00 N/m)(3.00 m)(4.50 m) +
0.5(-12,000.00 N/m)(3.00 m)(5.00 m) + 5,000.00 N × 8.00 m

The area under the load diagram between x = 0.00 m and x = 3.00 m is -18,000.00 N. The
change in shear between x = 0.00 m and x = 3.00 m is equal to the area under the load
diagram between these two points. At x = 0.00 m, the shear force is 16,333.33 N. Adding
-18,000.00 N to this value gives a shear force of V = -1,666.66 N at x = 3.00 m.

The shear curve is parabolic in this region.

The area under the load diagram between x = 3.00 m and x = 6.00 m is -18,000.00 N. The
change in shear between x = 3.00 m and x = 6.00 m is equal to the area under the load
diagram between these two points. At x = 3.00 m, the shear force is -1,666.67 N. Adding
-18,000.00 N to this value gives a shear force of V = -19,666.67 N at x = 6.00 m.

The shear curve is parabolic in this region.

At x = 8.00 m, a concentrated load of 5,000.00 N acts downward on the beam.

Concentrated forces create discontinuities in the shear diagram. The load of 5,000.00 N
causes the shear diagram to jump DOWN by 5,000.00 N at x = 8.00 m. Just slightly to the
left of x = 8.00 m, the shear force is 5,000.00 N. Adding -5,000.00 N to this value gives a
shear force of 16.18E-12 N just slightly to the right of x = 8.00 m.

maximum bending moment is M_max = 31117 Nm located at 2.86m from A

Draw all relevant
internal action diagrams for the rigid frame ABCDE shown in Figure 5. Determine the
magnitude and location of the maximum bending moment and mark this on your diagram.
Show all your working clearly.
For the cantilever ABC in Figure 2:
(i) Use dV/dx =  to derive the equation(s) for shear
(ii) Use dM/dx = V to derive the equation(s) for bending moment
(iii) Check your moment equation in region AB by deriving it from an appropriate free body diagram
