Product Prospectus
For my senior project, I decided to make a design of my home’s HVAC system and calculate
estimates to see what system would be the best for my home. We currently have an HVAC system that
meets our needs, but I want to go through the process myself. Our unit is getting older and we will need
to replace it down the road. Times are changing and technology is advancing, which adds a bigger price
tag to HVAC installations. During my shadowing experience at Lloyd’s heating, I found that estimates
and blueprints are made well before each job. I learned that this particular company jumps from job to
job as they may have to wait for a part, plumber, or electrician. A blueprint and estimate need to be
completed well ahead of every job so the company can work efficiently . A neat and organized design is
absolutely essential to minimize mistakes. I plan on drawing the blueprints of all the ductwork, vents,
gas lines, ventilation, and the system itself. My design will include very close measurements of each
part. It will be difficult to find exact measurements as all these parts are now closed off behind walls
and ceilings. This design will be color coded and will help future customers see where each part will be
to meet their needs. After the design, I will make three different estimates. These estimates will be very
similar except for the system itself. Systems vary in price and it is up to the customer to choose what
system fits their budget the best. This process will help me understand the importance of
communication between myself and the customer.

In order to create this product I will need a tape measure, pencil, ruler, and graph paper. These
tools will allow me to create a detailed blueprint. I will first take a piece of paper and draw a rough
sketch of the system and its parts. This will include estimated measurements.. This part of the process
should be relatively quick allowing me to take more time on the real blueprint. The final blueprint will
be drawn to scale allowing for the best representation of the HVAC system. This may take some time
and I will be sure to start as early as possible. After this is complete I will start making estimates of what
the job will cost. How much ductwork, ventilation, and gas hose it takes to complete the project will
need to be determined for the cost. Finally, I will find the three best systems that I think will best fit the
home. I will give these to the homeowner so they can make their decision.
I think the easiest and most enjoyable aspect of this project will be drawing the blueprints. I
enjoy making neat and organized drawings. On the other hand, the most difficult part will be finding
the measurements and estimates for the project. In most, if not all HVAC jobs, the drywall on the
house is not finished allowing for room to work. It is going to be tough to find these measurements as the
HVAC system in my house is behind the drywall. Estimates for the job are going to be quite
complicated as well because every house is different. It depends on the amount of material and time it
takes to complete this project. These problems can be solved by working around obstacles in my house
to get the best measurements possible. I will also ask for help from my mentor and other persons with
experience in the field. I will ask them to assist me in estimating the cost of systems and their parts.
Therefore, I now know what I need in order to create my product. I plan on starting as soon as I
can as my product could potentially take some time. I will start by drawing a rough draft of the system
and its parts. I then plan to have very detailed drawings that help me and also the customer know what

to expect. I believe that I will have lots of support from my mentee and parents in the creation of this
product. I feel I am prepared for this product and am ready to get started.
