Ratio and Proportion Practice for Class 6

The document discusses ratio, proportion, and examples of ratio and proportion word problems. Ratio is defined as the comparative relation between two amounts or quantities of the same type, expressed as a fraction. Proportion is defined as when two ratios are equal to each other. Examples are provided of ratio and proportion word problems involving finding ratios between given quantities, finding missing quantities based on given ratios, and finding mean and third/fourth proportionals between given quantities.

Ratio & Proportion

Ratio– The comparative relation between two amounts/quantities of same

type is called ratio.
The ratio of two amounts is equal to a fraction. It shows how much less or
more time an amount is in comparison to another.
Ratio always occurs between same units, as –Rupees: Rupees, kg: kg, Hour:
Hour, Second: Second etc.
Let an amount be x and another is y, then, the ratio between them is x : y or x
÷ y.
In ratio 1st number i.e., ‘x’ is called “antecedent”. And 2nd number i.e., ‘y’ is
called “consequent”.
If a:b :: c:d, then a and d are called extremes and b and c are called means.
\ Product of extremes = Product of means. i.e., ad = bc

Proportion: When two ratios are equal to each other, then they are called
proportional as a:b = c:d, then, a, b, c and d are in proportion.
or, a:b :: c:d
E.g. 2:5 = 6 : 15, then we write 2:5 :: 6:15
