My dear Maria,
I am writing to tell you about something fascinating in Romania, my country, where
it no longer exists anywhere in the world.
It is about a cemetery where laughter and humor come first, namely Cimitirul Vesel
(Merry Cemetery) from Maramureș, Săpânța. You can't get out of it without laughing
with tears because it's made up of graves that each have a funny message and
wonderful colors. An example message is:
“Sub această cruce grea
Zace biata soacră-mea
Trei zile de mai trăia
Zăceam eu şi cetea ea.” which means: Under this heavy cross
My poor mother-in-law is lying
If he lived three more days
I was lying and she was reading.
Cimitirul Vesel is a unique burial place as well as an open-air museum and a
popular tourist attraction.
I can't wait for you to come to Romania to visit it together.
