Key concepts
What is research?
In this context, research is defined as a systematic and organized effort to look into a specific
problem that needs to be solved. Frequently, research focuses on how to solve real-world problems. The
findings of such research may be important in a specific context, but they are difficult to generalize to other
situations. Research, on the other hand, may be concerned with elucidating, validating, or constructing a
theory. The extent to which this theory is translatable into a specific context may determine its importance to
society or organizations.
The scientific method is used to conduct a careful and detailed investigation into a specific problem,
concern, or issue. It's the grown-up version of elementary school science fair projects, in which you try to
learn something by conducting an experiment. This is best accomplished by turning the problem into a
question, with the goal of the study being to find an answer.
In most cases, research aids society in determining the WHAT and HOW of a problem. It must be a
thorough investigation that leads to a valid conclusion that will aid in the discovery of answers to the
questions.
Characteristics of Research
Prieto, et. al 2017
Empirical - is a theory that is based on observations and experiments. This implies that any
conclusion reached is entirely based on ethical or hard evidence gathered from observations and real-
life experiences.
Systematic - follows a set of procedures that are both orderly and sequential, and are based on sound
procedures and principles. Because a researcher who wants to do a perfect research design or process
must evaluate or obtain the necessary information from the market in a systematic manner, research
should be systematic. To conduct a perfect or systematic research process, several steps are required,
and all of the procedures are interconnected.

Controlled - in research, all variables are kept constant except those that are being tested or
experimented on. Because the relationship between two or more variables is influenced by each
other, it should be controlled (whether it is internal or external). It will not be possible to design a
specific research report if the research is not controllable.
Employ hypothesis – is a search for facts, answers to questions, and solutions to problems is
referred. A hypothesis is a proposed solution to a research problem that has been advanced in order
to be tested.
Analytical - demonstrates data collection procedures, whether historical, descriptive, or case study.
Analytical research brings together minor details to produce more verifiable hypotheses. Analytic
research explains why something is true as a result. It's a type of research that necessitates the
application of critical thinking skills as well as the evaluation of relevant facts and data.
Objective - is logical and unbiased. All of the conclusions are logically derived from real-life
scenarios. The claim of objective research is that it describes a true and correct reality that is
independent of those who participate in the research process. Although this is a simplified view of
the various approaches to research, it is an important distinction to consider.
Original work - it necessitates its own examination and generates the data required to finish the
study. It is considered an original study when the report of a study is written by the researchers who
conducted the study, their hypothesis or research question, as well as the study's purpose, researchers
describe their research methods, the research findings are presented.
Importance of Research
Research in the field of medicine
The role of research in medicine is the discovery of drugs for the overall wellbeing. Moreover, it
discovers and detect new disease and treatments.
Quantitative research in medical education tends to be predominantly observational research based
on surveys or correlational studies. Experimental research designs may enhance the quality of medical
education. Said designs test interventions like curriculum, teaching-learning process, or assessment with an
experimental group. Either a comparison or controlled group of learners may allow researchers to overcome
validity concerns and infer potential cause-effect generalizations. When designing their own or evaluating
other researchers’ studies, researchers must always keep in mind internal and external validity concerns. The
selection of a research design for any study should be within the parameters of the research questions as
stated in the problem statement or hypothesis. In quantitative research, the findings will reflect the reliability
and validity (psychometric characteristics of the measured outcomes or dependent variables such as changes
in knowledge, skill, or attitudes used to assess the effectiveness of medical education intervention or the
independent variable or interest.
Many basic medical science researchers concentrate on elucidating disease molecular mechanisms,
with the goal of eventually developing therapeutics. Drugs can be developed to specifically target disease
phenotypes by identifying key molecules that lead to disease phenotypes, resulting in a greater number of
potential therapeutics.
Research in the field of Technology and Communication
The roles of research and science discovers the innovation on technology and communication which
is important to human comfort in daily life. The use of the invention and innovation in technology makes
our life easier. To illustrate for nowadays, it is impossible to list every single example of technology in our
daily lives. All of these items are examples of technology, whether they are practical (such as washing
machines, tumble dryers, refrigerators, cars, flooring materials, windows, or door handles) or recreational

(such as televisions, Blu-ray players, games consoles, reclining chairs, or toys). Technology appears in
everyday life as a result of various scientific knowledge applications in society. In the worlds of business,
industry, and medicine, learn about the technology that is most commonly used in everyday life.
The role of research in the advances in information and communication technology, or ICT, have
made sharing information across the street or around the world easier, cheaper, and faster. The telegraph and
telephone were examples of communication technology in the nineteenth century, and more recently,
everything from cell phones to the latest smart cars. It's impossible to draw precise boundaries around the
meaning of communication technology with so many devices connected to the internet and wired for
communication.
Communication technology transitioned from analog to digital, greatly increasing the capacity of the
underlying devices. For example, analog television technology only provided a few TV channels, whereas
modern digital televisions provide hundreds. Alternative forms of entertainment, such as music and access to
YouTube videos, are also possible with digital televisions connected to the internet. Other technological
breakthroughs, such as email and the World Wide Web, ushered in a new era of communication unlike any
other. With the internet, a single person could reach hundreds or thousands of people for very little money or
effort. A computer user can send an email to one, a dozen, or ten thousand people with a single click of the
mouse. Websites, podcasts, and social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter allow people to
interact with one another.
Information creation and storage have also been transformed by computer technology. Word
processing and spreadsheet programs, for example, made it easier to create large, complex data sets.
Transmission speeds increased from kilobytes to megabytes to gigabytes in a fraction of a second thanks to
advances in digital communication. Memory chips continued to expand, allowing for the creation and
storage of larger and larger files. It's not uncommon for a laptop computer to have a terabyte of storage,
which was unheard of only a decade ago.
