MODULE 2: NATURE OF COMMUNICATION 

I. OVERVIEW 

Communication is essential for life. Communicating is the fundamental aspect of being human. It is the
medium through which the information is transferred and synthesized. Also, it is the process of using
verbal and non-verbal messages to generate meaning within and across various contexts, cultures, and
channels or platforms. (BSU Open University)

This module will show that communication is not just an activity even if we do it on a daily basis. But
also, it will explain how communication is maximized in our society.

A. CONTENT STANDARD

The learner understands the nature and elements of oral communication in context. 

B. PERFORMANCE STANDARD 

The learner designs and performs effective controlled and uncontrolled oral communication activities
based on context. 

C. VALUE STANDARD

The learner is able to appreciate the importance of studying communication and value human
interactions.

Communication 

Communication is from the Latin word ‘communicare’ which means ‘to share’. It is the sharing
of information between different individuals. It includes the sharing of ideas, concepts, imaginations,
behaviors and written content. Communication is simply defined as the transfer of information from one
place to another. This transfer of information can be conducted in several ways.

Communication refers to a two-way process of conveying information, process, ideas or feelings


between two or more persons either verbally or non-verbally, using a medium. 
Communication is a process of sharing and conveying messages or information from one person
to another. (McCornack, 2014) 

Humans are social beings. We cannot live without communicating. Human communication is the
process of making sense out of the world and sharing that sense with others by creating meaning through
verbal and nonverbal messages. 

Benefits of Studying Communication 

1. To improve your employability – According to the 2016 study conducted by LinkedIn in the United
States, communication skills topped the list of the most sought-after soft skills among employers. It is
believed that successful business transaction is a result of excellent communication. Good
communication skills are essential to allow others and yourself to understand information more
accurately and quickly. Succeeding in your career requires good communication skills.

2. To improve relationships – Being able to articulate your feelings and ideas is one of the most
important life skills you need to master. Good communication skills allow an individual to clarify details
that lessen conflicts. Moreover, using appropriate words, medium, and body language leads to
productive conversations. 

3. To improve your physical and emotional health - A poorly delivered message may result in
misunderstanding, frustration, anxiety, and stress. 

4. Allows you to speak concisely – Communication skills training will help you learn how best to
communicate effectively in a wide range of situations, and how to be direct in order to get the most out

5. Enhances your professional image – In your career, you will represent your business or company in
spoken and written form. Your professionalism and attention to detail will reflect positively on you and

6. Preventing and resolving problems – The ability to communicate effectively plays a large role in
solving conflicts and preventing potential ones from arising. The key is to remain calm, make sure all
parties are heard and find a solution that is ideal for everyone involved. (Porland Community College) 

Functions of Communication

Communication as a human activity always serves a function. It is categorized into different uses
such as regulation/ control, for social interaction, motivation, information and emotional expression

1. Communication for Regulation and Control - Communication can be used to control the activities
and behavior of human beings. It is considered as a powerful function of language/ communication. 

Example: 

Doctor’s prescriptions.  Parents’ instruction to their children


Employers’ order to their employees  School policies 
City ordinances Laws

2. Communication for Social Interaction - Communication can be used to produce social interaction.
Human beings develop and maintain bonds, intimacy, relations and associations primarily through
communication. It allows individuals to interact with others. 

Example: 

Marriage proposals Asking a friend for a coffee date 

3. Communication for Motivation - refers to the person using the language to give a reason/s to do
something and to express desires, needs, wants and aspirations. It encourages or motivates people to live
better. 

Example: 

I need to + reason I want + reason


I dream of + reason  

4. Communication for Emotional Expression – It facilitates people’s expression of their feelings and
emotions. Communicator shows feelings whether it is love, fear, anger, joy or any other emotion.
Emotional expression can be done through language and verbal communication.  

5. Communication for Information - Communication can be used for giving and getting facts and
information. It enables humans to get to know the world.  
Strategies in giving an information:

A. Using RHETORICAL QUESTION

Example: Did you know that a turtle’s shell is actually part of its skeleton, it’s made up of over
50 bones which include the turtle's rib cage and spine? 

B. Using STATEMENTS OF FACTS

Example: One hundred and twenty nine (129) of approximately 300 species of turtle on earth
today are either vulnerable, endangered or critically endangered according to the International
Union for Conservation of Nature.
