Earth Rotation and Revolution Worksheet

The documents provide information about the solar system, rotation, and revolution. They include a worksheet with questions about the solar system, definitions and facts about rotation and revolution, diagrams demonstrating these concepts, and an experiment on rotation. Some key points are: - There are 8 planets in the solar system. Rotation is the spinning of planets on their axes, while revolution is the movement of planets around the sun. - Earth rotates from west to east over 24 hours, causing day and night. It revolves around the sun over 365 days, causing the four seasons. - Rotation occurs on an imaginary line called the axis. Revolution follows an elliptical path called the orbit. The sun is at the center

TOPIC: EARTH AND SPACE-ROTATION AND REVOLUTION

Name: _________________________ Date: __________________________

FACTS / TIPS:

The earth makes two movements at the same time. These

movements are rotation and revolution.

Rotation

 Rotation is the spinning of a planet on its axis (imaginary line

that passes through the earth).
 Earth rotates on its axis from west to east due to this
movement, one part of the earth gets light (day) and the
other part is in darkness (night).
 The earth takes 24 hours to complete a single rotation thus
giving us day and night.

ON YOUR OWN.

1. Draw a diagram showing rotation.

2. Planets make two movements at the same time. They are
_________________________ and ____________________________.
3. Each planet rotates on its ___________________.
4. Earth rotates from ________________ to __________________.
5. The imaginary line that passes through the Earth is called the
_____________________.

Experiment on rotation
Items needed
styrofoam ball - represents Earth
skewer - represents Earth‟s axis
flashlight – represents the sun

Procedure
I. Place the skewer through the ball.
II. Darken the room.
III. Hold the skewer with the ball in one hand and the flashlight
in the other.
IV. Shine the flashlight on the ball.
V. Slowly turn the skewer.
VI. Record your observations.

FACTS/ TIPS:

Revolution

 Revolution is the movement of the planets around the sun.

 Earth takes a full year (365 ¼ days) for one complete
revolution around the sun.
 The path the planets follow around the sun is called its orbit.
 Revolution causes the four seasons to occur namely: Winter,
Autumn, Spring and Summer. Sometimes the sun sets early
(first part of the year) and another time it sets late (ending
part of the year).
