Silsbee Method for Current Transformer Testing

The document describes the Silsbee method for testing current transformers to determine percentage ratio error and phase angle error. It involves connecting the current transformer and various meters in a circuit, passing a rated current through the primary winding, measuring the current in the primary and secondary windings while adjusting a phase shifting transformer to minimize one wattmeter and maximize the other, then calculating the percentage ratio error and phase angle error.

EXPERIMENT-7

SILSBEE METHOD OF TESTING CURRENT TRANSFORMER

Aim: To determine percentage ratio error and phase angle error

Apparatus:

1. SCT - 50/5A, 10/5A,5/5A

2. CCT - 50/5A, 10/5A,5/5A

3. Ammeter -0-20A

4. Wattmeter - 200mA,250v,50W

5. Load
Procedure:

1. Connect the connections as per the circuit diagram

2. Rated current is passing through the primary winding using the boosting transformer
3. Phase shifting transformer is adjusted to its maximum and the corresponding values with
respected to the minimum readings are noted
4. The current in primary and secondary is measured again the phase shifting transformer is so
adjusted so that W1 reading is zero W2 reading is W2
5. Percentage ratio error and phease angle error of the given current transformer are calculated
using Silsbee method.

Table:

S.N IP IS V W1 W2 W1’ W2’ PHASE RATIO
