WORKSHEET-1 (ANALYSIS OF STEAM POWER CYCLE)
1. A simple ideal Rankine cycle with water as the working fluid operates between th
pressure limits of 4 MPA in the boiler and 30 KPa in the condenser. If the quality at
the exit of the turbine cannot be less than 85 percent what is the maximum thermal
efficiency this cycle can have?
2. A simple ideal Rankine cycle with water as the working fluid operates between the
pressure limits of 4MPA in the boiler and 20K Pa in the condenser and a turbine inlet
temperature of 700◦ C. The boiler is sized to provide a steam flow of 50kg/s. Determine
the power produced by the turbine and consumed by the pump.
3. Consider a 210MW steam power plant that operates on a simple ideal Rankine cycle.
Steam enters the turbine at 10MPA and 500◦ C and is cooled in the condenser at a
pressure of 10kpa. Show the cycle on T-s diagram with respect to saturation lines,
and determine
• The quality of the steam at the turbine exit
• The thermal efficiency of the cycle , and
• The mass flow rate of the steam.
4. Consider a steam power plant that operates on the reheat Rankine cycle. The plant
maintains the boiler at 17.5MPA, the Re-heater at 2MPA, and the condenser at 50kpa.
The temperature is 550◦ C at the entrance of the high pressure turbine and 300◦ C at
the entrance of the low pressure turbine. Determine the thermal efficiency of this
system.
5. An ideal reheat Rankine cycle with water as the working fluid operates the boiler at
15,000kpa, the re-heater at 2000kpa and the condenser at 100kpa. The temperature is
450◦ C at the entrance of the high pressure and low pressure turbines. The mass flow
rate through the cycle is 1.74 kg/s. Determine
• The power used by pumps
• The power produced by the cycle,
• The heat transfer in the re-heater, and
• The thermal efficiency of this system.
6. A steam power plant operates on an ideal reheat Rankine cycle between the pressure
limit of 15MPA and 10kpa . The mass flow rate of the steam through the cycle is
12kg/s. Steam enters both stages of the turbine at 500◦ C. If the moisture content of
the steam at the exit of the low pressure turbine is not to exceed 5 percent. Determine
• The pressure at which reheating takes place.
2
• The total rate of heat input in the boiler and
• The thermal efficiency of the cycle,
• Show the cycle on T-s diagram with respect to saturation lines.
7. A steam power plant operates on an ideal Regenerative Rankine cycle steam enters
the turbine at 6MPA and 450◦ C and is condensed in the condenser at 20kpa. Steam
is extracted from the turbine at 0.4MPA to heat the feed water an open feed water
heater. Water leaves the feed water heater as a saturated liquid. Show a cycle on a T-s
diagram and Determine the net work out put per kilogram of steam flowing through
the boiler and the thermal efficiency of the cycle.
8. Consider an ideal steam regenerative Rankine cycle with two feed water heaters, one
closed and one open. Steam enters the turbine at 10MPA and 600◦ C and exhaust
to the condenser at 10kpa. Steam is extracted from the turbine at 1.2MPA for the
closed feed water heater and at 0.6MPA for the open one. The feed water is heated to
the condensation temperature of the extracted steam in the closed feed water heater.
The extracted steam leaves the closed feed water heater as saturated liquid which is
subsequently throttled to the open feed water heater. Show the cycle on ts diagram
with respect to saturation line and determine the mass flow rate of steam through the
boiler for a net power output of 400MW and the thermal efficiency of the cycle.
9. By writing an energy balance on the heat exchanger of a binary vapor power cycle,
obtain a relation for the ratio of mass flow rates of two fluids in terms of their enthalpies.
