Introduction to Geomorphology Concepts

Geomorphology is the study of landforms and the processes that shape the Earth's surface. This lecture introduces geomorphology by defining geology as the study of Earth materials, processes, history, and life. It outlines that geomorphology specifically examines surface features and how geological forces deform layers and form continents and ocean basins over time. The lecture also explains why geomorphology is important for understanding landscape evolution and hazards, and helping with problems like pollution, resources, and infrastructure planning.

What is geology????????????????
Geology is the
study of the
Earth, its
processes, its
materials, its
history, and its
effect on humans
and life in
general.
What is Geology ?
Comprehensive Definition: The science that deals
with the study of the planet Earth –
-the materials of which it is made, the processes that
act to change these materials from one form to
another, and the history recorded by these materials;
-the forces acting to deform the outer layers of the
earth and create ocean basins and continents;
-the processes that modify the Earth’s surface.

Why Study Geology? Or Task of a
Geologist……………….
♣ Find abundant supplies of clean water for
drinking and other purposes.
♣ Search for valuable deposits of natural
resources such as iron, gold, coal, gas and oil etc.
They conduct regional studies which may shed
light on the potential for undiscovered resources.
♣Geologists also work to solve problems involving pollution and
waste disposal, and provide valuable input in land-use planning.
♣They determine the stability of
building sites
♣ They also try to minimize the threat to
communities at risk from geologic hazards.
Geologists study and help to mitigate floods,
swelling soils, and landslides etc.

Geomorphology: Definitions

• Geomorphology is the branch of Geology that deals with

the physical features of the surface of the Earth and the
geological processes by which they are produced.

• In a simple way: Geomorphology is the study of

landforms, i.e. the shape of the Earth’s surface.

Importance of Geomorphology
• Geomorphology is important because people live
on landforms and their lives are affected
(sometimes catastrophically) by geomorphic
processes:
• Slope determines whether soil accumulates and makes
arable land
• Slope stability controls landslides
• Mountains drastically affect the weather: rains, shadows,
monsoons
• We can infer the geologic history of a region from
observation of the landforms
