Assignment # 2
Question 1
1) Suppose that the drilling operator tells you that a hard layer was encountered before reaching the
specified borehole depth. What would be your decision as the geotechnical engineer?
2) A boring log shows a recovery ratio greater than one in a rock formation. Is it possible and why?
Question 2
List briefly the kind of information that can be collected from a site visit to:
i) an urban area ii) a rural area iii) an undeveloped area.
Question 3
Following are the SPT results for a sandy soil deposit. Determine the corrected SPT-N values.
(Note: GWT level at 43 ft).
Depth(ft) 10 15 20 25 30 35 40
γsoil (lb/ft3) 106 106 106 118 118 118 118
SPT-Records 2/3/4 2/4/5 3/5/6 4/7/9 5/8/10 6/8/12 8/8/14
Question 4
In a homogeneous deposit of dry sand, a cone penetration test was conducted with the following
results:
Depth (m) 3 5 8 10 15
Point Resistance (MPa) 2.7 4.8 7.4 10.1 14.5
Assuming that the average unit weight of sand is 16.8 kN/m3, estimate the soil friction angle Ф.
Question 5
a) A vane shear test was conducted in saturated clay. The height and diameter of the rectangular
vane were 4-in and 2-in, respectively. During the test, the maximum applied torque was 12.4 lb-ft.
Determine the undrained shear strength of the clay.
b) If this soil has a LL= 64 and a PL= 29, what would be the corrected Su for design purposes?
Question 6
Referring to Fig.(2.12) and assuming that we have a silty soil with:
Hw + h0 = 12.24m ; t1 = 24 hrs ; t2= 48 hrs; Δh1= 1.2; Δh2= 0.86m; Δh3 = 0.6m
Determine the GWT depth(hw).
Question 7
1) Outline the two main reasons for obtaining disturbed samples by the split-spoon and relatively
undisturbed samples by Shelby tubes.
2) Compute the area ratios of the following thin-wall Shelby tubes and comment:
ST-1: OD=3.0 in; ID=2.875 in; length = 24 in
ST-2: OD=4.5 in; ID=4.375 in; length = 36 in
3) Suggest the necessary sample type (disturbed / undisturbed) to determine:
a) Natural moisture content b) Grain size distribution
c) Soil classification d) Compaction characteristic
e) Consolidation characteristics f) Shear strength
g) permeability characteristics
