Impact of Social Systems on Disabilities

Two ways that social institutions can create or exacerbate disability are: 1) Lack of adequate infrastructure in schools to accommodate students with disabilities. For example, a student in a wheelchair was never provided a ramp for access to his secondary school. 2) Teachers and staff not being properly trained to work with students with disabilities. Untrained teachers may exacerbate students' disabilities through inappropriate treatment and lack of support. For example, teachers verbally abusing students with cognitive disabilities at one school. When social institutions fail to provide appropriate support and accommodations, it can negatively impact students with disabilities and limit their ability to participate and succeed. Better funding, training, facilities, and inclusion are needed.

Question 2

Identify and discuss at least two examples of how social institutions/systems can create or

exacerbate disability.

A disability is an impairment that may be cognitive, developmental, intellectual, mental,

physical, sensory or some combination of these it substantially affects a person’s life activities

and may be present from birth or occurred during a person’s life time While social institutions

are mechanisms or patterns of social order focused on meeting social needs, such as government,

economy, education, family, healthcare etc.

No human being is PERFECT but this is not the perception of those who find themselves without

a physical or mental disability. As such those who have challenges are often seen if deemed as

persons who cannot contribute in a meaningful way to society. These persons are not adequately

catered for. For example, in 1998 a brilliant young man who attended the secondary institution

was never able to take himself around the school suitable infrastructure was never built to

accommodate him even though he was equipped with a whole wheel chair. It was due to kind

gestures from friend and his dad that got him successful through secondary school. This

successful student is now at home not being able to peruse Tertiary institution he is locked away

unable to contribute in a meaningful to society.

Ideally, what should have happened is that from Nursery School the Ministry of Education and

the HM at that time should have made the requisite representation to the Department of

Education to have a ramp built with rails to make access into the building much easier and take

strain and worry off the kind hearted persons who assisted and his father to get him into the

building.

Additionally, when students would have done exams at college, universities, and schools the then

would have to wait for their results even though they may have marked the exam themselves, in

that they know what they would have done on the same exam. The thought of having to wait for

results is heart rending and can cause severe anxiety which can contribute to other health

problems. Not forgetting the thought of having to write an exam can cause anxiety example

when I have to write any exam I get anxious and when it’s time to collect my results in the line

the same thing occurs.

Moreover, if schools do not have the teachers / requisite personnel that are trained to teach / deal

with students or children who have a disability they may make that students disability worse and

cause the parents to spend excessive amount of money for instance at a particular school on the

Essequibo Coast there are studnets who have cognitive, intellectual and mental disabilities.

Teachers would tell those students a lot of ill things and lash out at them if they operate in a

certain way. In this case the teachers at that school are making those students disabilities worst.

They are damaging the nations students because they were not trained to deal with disabled

students.

The trauma some students go through is unthinkable. Imagine having a child who is smart i.e.

you the parent know that the child is smart but just because that child sees letters upside down

the child is placed at an institution where he cannot develop. After spending three years at the

institution a specialist discovers that the child is able to actually read fluently if letters or words

are placed in front of a mirror. These learning difficulties if detected early can result in less

stressful situations for all stake holders. Hence it is my fervent belief that due to the lack of

trained professional and poorly trained personals and woefully inadequate facilities / equipment

many students suffer tremendously.

The inadequate finances placed into the education sector by administration is another factor. This

is a job where patients must be exercised – a job where remuneration should be different. In

other words, payment should be higher due to poor payment. It is not attracting human resource

this is a push factor.

Often time inclusivity is being spoken off but how can this be actualized when differently able

persons are never adequately catered for. Inclosing it can be clearly understood that government

and all the intuitions be it Nursery, Primary, Secondary or Tertiary aid in the continued

frustration of these persons.
