Grade 10 Math Lesson Plan: Distance Formula

This document contains a detailed lesson plan in mathematics for grade 10 students. The lesson plan covers calculating distance between points using different formulas. It includes objectives, content and materials, procedures, and examples. The procedures section outlines teacher and student activities including reviewing concepts, working through examples, deriving the distance formula, and applying it to solve problems involving points on a map. Students practice finding distances between points aligned horizontally, vertically, and at other angles using appropriate formulas.

A DETAILED 4A’S LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS 10

I. Objectives:
Given several activities, the Grade 10 students are able to do the following
with at least 80% proficiency.

II. Content and Materials

Content: Distance Formula
Learning Resources:
Math Curriculum Guide (M10GE-IIg-1)
Callanta et al, Learner’s module (2015) pages 229-142

Materials: google map illustration, visual aid (cartolina and strips of printed
paper), worksheets, graphing paper.

III. Procedure:

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. Activity
Preparatory
“Good Morning Class” “We’re fine po.”
“How’s your day?”

Review: “We discussed about distance between

“What was our last discussion?” two points.”

“What formulas did you used is finding the “We used the formulas d=|x 2−x1| and
distance?” d=| y 2− y|.
“When you will use the formula
d=|x 2−x1|? ” “When the two points are aligned
horizontally.”

“How about the formula “When the two points aligned

d=| y 2− y 1|?” vertically.”
Directions: Using the formulas, answer
the following.
What is the distance from point M to
point N? M(-2,1) , N(5,1)
d=|x 2−x1|
d=|5−(−2 )|
d=7

Therefore, the distance from point M

to point N is 7 units.

What is the distance from point L to point

W? L(3,3) , W(3,-4)
d=| y 2− y 1|
d=|−4−3|
d=7

Therefore, the distance from point L

to point W is 7 units.

Since you already know how to find

the distance between points aligned
horizontally and vertically, we will move to
another activity.

MAIN ACTIVITY

“I have here the map of Imelda Park,

Samar Provincial Covered Court and
Catbalogan Covered Court plotted on the
cartesian plane.”

“What is the coordinate of each

location?”

“ You let S be the point for Samar S(2,8) , I(4,-6) and C(-8,6).
Provincial Covered Court, I for Imelda
Park and C for Catbalogan Covered
Court.”

B. Analysis
“No.”
“Can we use the formula d=|x 2−x1|?”
“Because the line is not horizontal.”
“Why?”
“No.”

“How about d=| y 2− y 1|?”

“Because the line is not vertical.”

“Why?”

C. Abstraction

“Since the given points are aligned to

neither horizontal nor vertical, we are
now using the distance formula.

“But first, let’s understand how the

distance formula is derive.”
“Consider this triangle XYZ.”

Y X “A right triangle.”

“What type of triangle is that?” “Using the Pythagorean Theorem.”

“How can we get the length of each

side of a right triangle?” “c 2=a2 +b 2”

“What is the equation of pythagorean “The value of a will be the distance

theorem?” between point X to point Y.”

“From the triangle XYZ, what would

be our a?” “d=|x 2−x1|”

“What would be the formula in finding

the distance of XY?”

“So, the value of a is just equal to “The value of b will be the distance
d xy =|x 2−x 1|.” between point Y to point Z.”

“How about the value of b?”

d=| y 2− y 1|.”
“What would be the formula in finding
the distance of YZ?”

“So, the value of the b is just equal to

d YZ =| y 2− y 1|.”

“Lastly, the value of c is unknown or

d XZ =?”

“So, if we substitute all the value, we

can come up with the distance
formula.”

d XY =∣ x 1−x 2 ∣
d YZ =∣ y 1 − y 2 ∣
d XZ 2=d XY 2 +d YZ2
d XZ 2=∣ x 1−x 2 ∣2 + ∣ y 1− y 2 ∣  2

to your quiz, do you have any question or
clarifications regarding the lesson?”

“ If none, then let’s proceed to your

quiz.”

IV. Evaluating Learning

Quiz #1
Find the distance between each pair of points. Round your answer to the nearest tenth,
if necessary.

4) The town of Newton is mapped on the coordinate grid with the origin being at City
Hall. Evan’s house is located at the point (-5, 7) and Billy’s house is located at (-2, 3).
How far is it from Evan’s house to Billy’s house?

V. Agreement
The students will answer Activity 5 numbers 8-10 on page 241,Learners’
Module.
