Energy Conservation and Efficiency Guide

This document provides an overview of energy conservation and efficiency topics taught in a module by Ms. Kruthi Jayaram. It defines important terms, discusses global efforts and India's scenario, and outlines three major incentives for energy conservation: decreasing energy requirements, conserving limited conventional energy assets, and saving the environment. It also describes categories of energy conservation opportunities and provides examples of general electrical opportunities in classes A, B, and C.

Energy Conservation and efficiency
• Introduction
• Important Terms and Definitions
• Important Aspects of Energy Conservation
• Global Efforts
• Achievements and Future Planning
• Energy Conservation/Efficiency
• Scenario in India
• Energy Audit
• Energy Conservation Opportunities
ENERGY
Three major incentives in energy conservation

• Decreasing the energy requirement

• Conserving the limited conventional assets

of energy

• Saving the environment

14th December…..
What is Energy Efficiency and
Conservation?
• Energy Efficiency and Conservation is doing
more with the same amount of energy or less
energy.

• Energy Efficiency and Conservation saves

money and makes buildings more comfortable,
healthy, and safe.
Efficiency vs. Conservation
Important Terms and Definitions
• Energy conservation: reduction in energy
consumption but without making any sacrifice
in the quality and quantity of the production.

• Energy audit: official, technical survey of the

energy consumption of an
organization/process/plant/equipment aimed at
reduction of energy consumption without
affecting productivity and to suggest methods
for energy conservation and reduction in energy
acquiring cost
Energy Conservation Opportunities (ECOs)

Category-A Category-C
Category-B
Important Terms and Definitions
• Energy management: planning, directing and
controlling the demand and supply of energy to
maximize productivity and comforts, and
minimize the energy cost and pollution with
conscious, judicious and effective use of energy

Demand Side management (DSM) Supply Side management (SSM)

Important Terms and Definitions
• Energy Strategy: selection of a particular course
to be followed from available alternatives under
prevailing constraints.
• Energy Policy: officially declared guideline for
the purpose of planning and actions
• Energy Planning: detailed formulation of
various actions in a given time frame to achieve
the objectives

*Strategy and policy are the guidelines for

planning*
Important Aspects of Energy Conservation

• Economic aspect Reduction in cost of product of energy

New job opportunities

• Environmental aspect

• Conservation of Non-renewable energy assets

ENERGY CONSERVATION PLANNING

a) Maximum energy efficiency

b) Maximum cost effectiveness in energy use
Energy Conservation/Efficiency
• EC is a technique to conserve energy and reduce
the cost of energy.

• It is more about making the best use of available

resources.

It can be achieved by 3 methods which comprises

of:

a) Capacity utilization
b) Fine tuning
c) Technology upgradation
Energy Conservation Act 2001
Principles of Energy Conservation
• Recycling of waste
• Modernization of technology
• Waste heat utilization
• Proper housekeeping
• Judicial use of proper types of energy
• Judicial use of proper type of fuel
• Cogeneration
• Training of manpower
• Adopting daylight saving time
• Proper operation and maintenance
GENERAL ELECRICAL ECO’s (Energy Conservation Opportunities)

Class A. Simple Electrical ECO’s

• Switching off the loads when not in use
• Changing from electrical heating to solar
heating
• Proper housekeeping
• Reducing peak demand
• Providing automatic thermostatic control to
water heaters, refrigerators etc.
• Tiny switches
• Operating cycle to conserve energy
• Replacement of lamps
GENERAL ELECRICAL ECO’s (Energy Conservation
Opportunities)

Class B. Intermediate Electrical ECO’s

• Installation of static VAR
• Automatic load switches
• Heat recovery
• Automatic voltage control
• Installation of shunt capacitors near inductive
load for power factor improvement
• Improvement in operation and maintenance
GENERAL ELECRICAL ECO’s (Energy Conservation
Opportunities)

Class C. Comprehensive Electrical ECO’s

• Modern, more efficient and easy to maintain plant

equipment's may replace old less efficient ones

• The simple manual/semi manual controlled

equipment's in an electrical plants are retrofitted
with energy efficient computer controlled
equipment's.
Energy Audit
• Energy audit is to carry out continuous systematic
procedure for the plant energy study or it is the
analysis of energy utilization.
• It involves in depth study of facilities with respect to
energy utilization.
Types of Energy Audit

• Preliminary audit

• Detailed audit

• Post audit follow up
