HYDRAULIC SHOCK ARRESTORS - “HS” SERIES

The effect is to close the hydraulic circuit and to restrain the piston with the
hydraulic fluid. This mode is termed the LOCKED CONDITION.

To ensure movement of the piston under load at a controlled speed, and also to
assist the control valve to lift without full load reversal, the shock arrestor is fitted
with an adjustable needle/orifice valve.

This secondary valve permits hydraulic fluid to bypass the main control valve at a
controlled rate.

The needle valve is normally set to restrict the velocity of the piston to a maximum
speed of 2 mm per second at the rated load of the shock arrestor. This mode is
termed CREEP or BLEED RATE.
The Carpenter & Paterson hydraulic shock arrestor is a velocity sensitive
device for restraining pipework and/or equipment subject to shock force or Release of the control valve is achieved at some 2 per cent of the rated load,

free flow condition.
During normal pipe expansions or contractions the shock arrestor offers very
little resistance to pipe movement. This resistance to normal thermal The activation velocity can be changed by fitting different size control valves. The

arrestor. These modifications should only be carried out in conjunction with a test stand
facility.
Activation of the shock arrestor is controlled by means of a compression and
tension control valve. During normal pipe movement excursions the control The provision for adjustment of the bleed rate is a patented feature of this shock

SPRING SWAY BRACE
The Carpenter & Paterson spring sway brace has been designed in six sizes related Optional Features
to specific pipe sizes. For normal application it is permissible to select on the basis
1. Can be supplied galvanised with plastic coated spring.
of pipe sizes and loads. When dealing with complex situations the unit should be
selected on a calculated basis.
2. Larger sizes can be custom-designed to suit client’s requirements.
The amount of energy required to control the pipework should be proportional to the
mass of the pipework. Factors such as the amplitude, frequency or vibration, the
nature of the vibration and the angle of approach of the sway brace from the axis of
movement should all be considered.
The unit comprises a pre-loaded spring which can be extended or compressed in
order to give increasing resistance in both directions. This increase in resistance
overcomes the dynamic forces generated by the equipment thereby damping
vibrations, opposing sway and absorbing shock forces.
All units have 75 mm travel in both tension and compression direction.
Size range: 1 to 6
Preset loads: 23 kg to 820 kg
Maximum force: 90 kg to 3270 kg

Standard Design Features

1. Compact design suitable for use in a confined space.

2. All units have 75 mm travel in either direction.

3. Vibration is opposed with an instantaneous counterforce returning the pipe to its

normal position.

4. Rod coupling allows limited rate adjustment.

5. Standard finish - green enamel.

6. SB 45 Sway Brace and Vibration Control Unit is shipped ready for

installation.

STIFFNESS RATE

This range of high stiffness rigid struts has been specifically

developed by Carpenter & Paterson for use in the nuclear power
industry.
Note:
It is available in 10 sizes ranging from 300 Kg to 60000 Kg. Stiffness Rate values given are for pin to pin lengths.
To achieve stiffness rates above, nuts must be tightened to torque value ‘Q1’ (refer to demensional
Stiffness values have been determined by test. table).

YOKE TYPE RESTRAINT CLAMPS

This range of high stiffness yoke clamps has been specifically developed
by Carpenter & Paterson for use in the nuclear industry and for use in
conjunction with our range of mechanical/hydraulic shock arrestors and
rigid struts.
The stiffness values of these components have been determined by test.
It should be noted that the pin ø P and the dimension G will depend on
whether the clamp is used in conjunction with a rigid strut or shock arrestor.
These dimensions must be specified. The component detailed is for use
with a rigid strut.

PIPE CLAMPS AND RISER CLAMPS

This range of products are materially and dimensionally similar to the range of The Riser Clamps are designed, in accordance with various International
Pipe Clamps and Riser Clamps listed in our current Ancillary Catalogue. These standards, to carry all of the Design load on one side only.
products may be used in conjunction with our range of Dynamic Restraints where
stiffness is not a consideration.
Care should be taken when selecting to ensure that the load rating of the Strut,
etc., is not greater than the load capacity of the Clamp. For loads greater than the
rated load Yoke Type Restraint Clamps should be used.
It should be noted that the pin diameters and gap C will depend on whether the
clamp is used in conjunction with a Strut or Shock Arrestor. These dimensions
must be specified. The pin and gap dimension given are suitable for a Rigid Rod
Connection.

PIPE WHIP RESTRAINTS

The Carpenter & Paterson pipe whip restraint is an elastic device which
restrains pipework and absorbs energy in the event of a pipe failure.
In the unlikely event of a rupture or break in a pressure piping system,
the large jet forces generated by the escaping fluid may cause the
pipework to ‘whip’, that is, to move in a direction which is at an angle to
the original longitudinal axis of the pipe.
It is desirable to provide pipe restraint devices which will limit the
movement of the ruptured pipe, and to prevent impact damage to local
components.
This type of whip restraint offers the following features:-
1. The restraint absorbs the energy of the moving pipe and has high
energy absorption in relation to its size.

2. The restraint is compact in size.

3. The restraint provides a relatively large normal clearance between

the restraint and the pipe to allow for normal thermal movement.

4. Design of restraints undertaken to suit specific customer

requirements.
