Pole drawings
Scaled drawing sheets can be produced automatically by PLS-POLE according to user specified parameters.
You have complete flexibility in choosing scales and page appearance.
The drawings can be sent directly to a Windows® printer, or they can be exported as DXF files readable by
most CAD systems (AutoCAD ®, Microstation ®, etc.) for further enhancements, or they (together with other
project documents) can automatically be converted to PDF documents as a truly universal way to share
them with all interested parties.
Drawings can be embellished further by adding Inset Views and even attaching external files to be used.

Optimization routines like Model/ Optimum Pole Selection and Model/ Tubular Steel Davit Arm Optimizer allow engineers to test numerous combinations of pole, arm, or cross-brace properties and locations efficiently. These routines improve the design process by providing optimal solutions that minimize weight and material usage while maintaining structural integrity, thus streamlining workflows and reducing reliance on trial and error methods .
PLS-POLE provides several tools for load analysis and optimization, including Model/ Optimum Pole Selection, Model/ Steel Pole Shaft Optimizer, Model/ X-Brace Optimizer, and Model/ Tubular Steel Davit Arm Optimizer. These tools allow engineers to evaluate various combinations of structural properties and configurations to find the lightest possible elements, enhancing design accuracy and reducing manual trial and error efforts, thereby contributing significantly to the efficiency of structural design .
PLS-POLE assists in creating industry-standard outputs by allowing users to produce scaled drawing sheets automatically, specify scales, page appearance, and export formats like DXF for CAD systems, or convert documents to PDF. This ensures designs can be shared universally and embellished with inset views or external files, fostering collaboration and professional documentation of project designs .
The load capacities of joints in structural models can be evaluated using Connection and Anchor (CAN) elements. These elements are specifically designed to check joint capacities due to forces or moments transferred from other structural components such as braces, cables, guys, crossarms, davit arms, and poles. CAN elements, which do not have graphical displays or physical attributes, allow engineers to select up to four elements from which forces and moments can be passed to the joint, thereby providing an accurate assessment of joint strength under various loading conditions .
The Deformed Geometry View provides a graphical summary of the analysis results, allowing engineers to visually assess the effects of applied loads on a structure. This view changes based on selections made in the 3D Controls dialog box, helping engineers understand deformation patterns and the structural response to loads in a comprehensive manner .
An engineer should use the Batch Import or Edit Concentrated Loads command to reference a table version of the vector load file that accommodates all attachment points. This allows for editing and exporting options accessed through right-click interactions within the table. Ensuring that these loads are correctly saved with the vector file (.lca) and potentially importing data from external calculators or Excel files can enhance accurate load integration .
Inset views and external file attachments enhance scaled drawing sheets in PLS-POLE by allowing for detailed visualization and a comprehensive presentation of the structural model. Inset views enable the highlighting of specific areas of the model, making it easier to focus on complex sections or critical components. Attaching external files, such as additional design documents or data sets, provides context and supplementary information directly within the drawing, facilitating better communication and understanding among stakeholders. These features collectively improve the clarity and utility of technical documentation .
Optimization routines in PLS-POLE enhance engineering efficiency by allowing users to examine multiple combinations of pole, arm, or cross-brace properties and locations more accurately and swiftly than trial-and-error methods. This results in the selection of the lightest possible elements, optimizing the structural integrity and material use. The elements that can be optimized using these routines include the Model/ Optimum Pole Selection, Model/ Steel Pole Shaft, Model/ X-Brace, and Model/ Tubular Steel Davit Arm. These optimizations aid in reducing project costs and improving design effectiveness .
Davit arms are prismatic components used in structural modeling, primarily serving as supports or extensions that can be attached rigidly to any joint with a pre-defined label. They are made of tubular steel and can have any of the cross-section shapes available for tubular poles. The orientation of davit arms can be modified by specifying an azimuth angle, which allows them to be directed in any direction around the pole. Additionally, intermediate joints along the length of the member can be added to change its shape, making it inclined or curved. This flexibility allows for versatile integration into structural designs .
PLS-POLE webinars cover a wide range of topics such as structural analysis, line optimization, and storm hardening, among others. These sessions, totaling 18 hours over 13 topics, are available for viewing or download, helping users gain detailed insights into software application and industry practices. This enhances user capabilities by providing technical skills and knowledge necessary for effective power line system management and structural analysis .
