Bearing:-
Bearing is a machine element that constrains relative motion to only the desired motion, and
reduces friction between moving parts. The design of the bearing may, for example, provide for
free linear movement of the moving part or for free rotation around a fixed axis; or, it may
prevent a motion by controlling the vectors of normal forces that bear on the moving parts. Most
bearings facilitate the desired motion by minimizing friction. Bearings are classified broadly
according to the type of operation, the motions allowed, or to the directions of the loads (forces)
applied to the parts.
Motorcycles are one of the most popular modes of transport today, especially in dusty and
traffic-filled streets. With so many moving parts, it should come as no surprise that the average
motorcycle has between 20 to 30 bearings of a number of varieties. Your average motorcycle
would not enjoy smooth handling or transmission without them. Take a look at Bearing Centre’s
breakdown of just some of the bearings used in motorcycles.

Deep groove ball bearings
(1) (2)
The Deep groove ball bearing is the most common bearing found in a motorcycle. These
bearings can be found in the wheels of the motorcycle, as well as the camshafts and transmission
cases. The manufacturing of ball bearings is stringent because of the immense pressures they
must withstand. This type of ball bearing must tolerate high speeds and radial loads, whilst also
having low torque capacity.
The most typical type of bearing, these are used in a wide range of fields. They include grease
enclosed sealed and shield bearings for ease of use.
Other types include bearings with a locating snap-ring to facilitate positioning when mounting
the outer ring, expansion compensating bearings that absorb variations in bearing fitting surface
dimensions due to housing temperature, and TAB bearings that are resistant to contamination in
lubricating oil

2) Applications
Deep groove ball bearings are the most widely used bearing type and are suitable for
many different industries. Matching that versatility across many different applications,
they are available in a wide range of designs, variants and sizes. Here are examples of
applications in which deep groove ball bearings might be used
Electric motors and generators

Needle roller bearings
These bearings use small needle rollers, 6mm or less in diameter with a width 3 to 10 times diameter, as
rolling elements. As such, they feature low cross-section height, high load capacity relative to
dimensions, and high rigidity due to the number of elements, and are suited to wobbling or pivoting
motion.

Needle roller bearings are bearings with cylindrical rollers that are small in diameter relative
to their length. The modified roller/raceway profile prevents stress peaks to extendbearing
service life.
Needle roller bearings are a type of roller bearing which uses small cylindrical rollers. Found
in the crankshaft, chain drive systems and the chassis (among others) of motorcycles, needle
roller bearings allow easy movement with minimal noise. Needle roller bearings are
especially useful considering the compact design of
motorcycles, as radial space is limited.

Combined needle roller bearings
Needle roller bearings are bearings with cylindrical rollers that are small in diameter
relative to their length. The modified roller/raceway profile prevents stress peaks to
extend bearing service life.
supplies needle roller bearings in many different designs, series and in a wide range of
sizes, which makes them appropriate for a wide variety of operating conditions and
applications.
5
Tapered roller bearings
Tapered roller bearings are designed so the inner and outer ring raceway and the apex of the tapered
rollers intersect at one point on the bearing centerline. For this reason, the rollers are pushed against the
inner ring rib and roll guided by the rib, receiving the loads from the inner ring raceway surface and the
outer ring raceway surface as a combined load on the raceway surface.
Component force is produced in the axial direction when a radial load is applied, so the bearings must be
used in pairs. The inner ring with rollers and outer ring separate, facilitating mounting with clearance or
preload. However, assembled clearance is hard to manage and calls for attention. Tapered roller bearings
are capable of supporting large loads, both axial and radial.
Similar to deep groove ball bearings, tapered roller bearings have inner and outer ring raceways.
However, these raceways are tapered and contain tapered rollers. This allows these bearings to
withstand combined loads ‒ including simultaneous radial and axial loads. In motorcycles,
tapered roller bearings are present in the steering head ‒ allowing for smooth handling.
The rollers are stabilized and restrained by a flange on the inner ring, against which their large
end slides, which stops the rollers from popping out due to the “pumpkin seed effect” of their
conical shape. The larger the half angles of these cones the larger the axial force that the bearing
can sustain.

Types of tapered roller bearings
1) Single row Tapered Roller bearings
2) Matched tapered roller bearings
3) Double row Tapered roller bearings
4) Four row Tapered roller bearings
Features and benefits
1) Low friction, noise, and vibration
2) Long service life
3) Enhanced operational reliability even under difficult conditions
4) Running-in period with reduced temperature peaks
5) Separable and interchangeable components help to facilitate mounting, dismounting and
maintenance
Applications
1) Single row tapered roller bearings are typically used in applications with combined loads.
Single row tapered roller bearings can also be used in sets. Single row tapered roller
bearings can be matched face-to-face, back-to-back or in tandem to deliver specific
advantages depending on operating conditions.
2) Double row tapered roller bearings are typically used in gearboxes, hoisting equipment,
rolling mills and machines in the mining industry.
3) Four row tapered roller bearings are used almost exclusively in work roll applications
such as rolling mills.
7
Thrust ball bearings
Thrust bearings differ from other types of bearings in that they are designed specifically to
tolerate axial loads. Thrust bearings come in both roller and ball varieties, both of which are
present in motorcycles, depending on the model.
All these bearings come together to ensure that the revolving parts of your motorcycle run
seamlessly. These bearings help reduce friction between mechanical parts, turning motive power
into kinetic energy. Ultimately, the performance of your motorcycle relies heavily on the
condition and quality of your bearings. Be sure to check if your bearings are worn, and ensure
that you always purchase genuine bearings from a reputable supplier.
Features and benefits
1. Separable and interchangeable
2. The separable components of thrust ball bearings are interchangeable (fig. 3, fig. 4). This
facilitates mounting and dismounting, and maintenance inspections.
3. Initial misalignment
4. Bearings with sphere housing washer(s) can accommodate initial misalignment
5. Interference fit
6. Shaft washers have a ground bore to enable an interference fit. The bore of the housing
washer is turned and always larger than the shaft washer bore.
Applications
1. Industrial fans
2. Industrial pumps
3. Metals
4. Industrial transmissions
5. Mining, mineral processing and cement

Conclusion:
Bearings find application in every industry that comprises components and equipment. It’s
important to keep in mind various factors such as bearing friction, temperature, and lubrication
while selecting these bearings. Also, the design and construction of bearing does have an impact
on performance . Factors such material, seal, race, locating, and maximum static and dynamic
loads should be evaluated while choosing bearings..
