Abstract

Safety for humans is their foremost concern and thus we humans search for
devices to protect us against everything dangerous that we come in contact with
and thus begin the search for a device that protects us from dogs as ,Many
people are interested in their safety when it comes to aggressive dogs. That is
our Main Idea for this project .

1. Introduction

Humans and animals are using a specific method of hearing ,after they
are collected by the ear flap , the sound waves enter through the external
auditory canal into the diaphragm which transforms the sound waves into
the vibrations that are transmitted to the hammer and anvil and then to the
stirrups .
The human hearing range lies between 4Hz to 20KHz, below which is the
infrasound frequencies and above which is i.e. the 20Khz range is the
ultrasound frequencies .Animals , especially dogs have the hearing
capability of over the 20Khz range and respond to the ultrasonic
frequency which are thus used in the training of dogs as ultrasonic
whistles .

But despite their being a training method and various other devices like a
dog repellant spray ,etc. there are still many cases of dog attacking people
in India and worldwide giving the need of another device that can be
successfully used to repel dogs away from humans without harming
anyone in the process ,this being the aim of the device HANDHELD
DOG REPELLER USING IOT.

2. Literature survey:

The Literature Survey of the Handheld Dog Repeller device:

3. Proposed Methodology:

In this device the circuit used is as follows

The ICNE555 timer ic is used to generate square wave pulses that give
the ultrasonic frequencies through the speaker 1 which is a piezo buzzer.
The potentiometer/variable resistance in the circuit is there to increase or
decrease the frequency to be emitted by the speaker, apart from that there
is a wi-fi module esp8266 in the circuit that uses IOT to give a result of
the frequency used on the dog on the cloud platform.

4. Results :

The results include video results on two different dogs one trained and the
other untrained, apart from that the frequency detection of the same has
been shown in the thingspeak

The results also include the PCB designing of the hardware
implementation as shown below :

The PCB design is as follows:

5. Conclusion

The Handheld dog repeller circuit has been implemented in the hardware
as well as on the IOT platform and is working as intended. The device is
successful in the repelling dogs at a short range and works on both trained
and untrained dogs given there is a frequency gap between the two, the
trained dog responded on the frequency of over 35KHz to 40KHz

6|P age
whereas untrained dog responded in the frequency range of 20KHz to
30KHz.

This is a multi-use device that does not require direct aim. it is light
weight and thus uses a frequency that is irritable to dogs causing them to
either run away or lie down in surrender usually run away.
So, to conclude the multi-use light weight device handheld dog repeller
works successfully and does as intended.

Testing the device on different types of dogs (trained and untrained) provided insights into its efficacy across a range of scenarios. The trained dogs responded to higher frequencies, while untrained dogs reacted to lower ones, demonstrating the device's ability to affect varied canine behavior. This comprehensive testing under diverse conditions bolsters confidence in the device's universal applicability and highlights its practical utility in real-world settings regardless of a dog's prior training or behavior profile.

Design considerations related to the ultrasonic frequency range include ensuring that the emitted frequencies are above 20KHz to avoid human hearing discomfort while effectively repelling dogs. The device uses a range of frequencies (20KHz to 40KHz) to address variability in dogs' hearing sensitivity and behavior, distinguishing between trained and untrained dogs. The adjustable frequency through the potentiometer allows personalization based on the specific situation or dog encountered, enhancing device versatility.

The main function of the handheld dog repeller device is to protect humans from potentially aggressive dogs by repelling them without causing harm. It achieves this by emitting ultrasonic frequencies through a piezo buzzer, which are irritating to dogs. The device includes an ICNE555 timer to generate these frequencies and a potentiometer to adjust them. Additionally, a Wi-Fi module uploads data about frequency usage to a cloud platform.

Evidence suggesting successful implementation includes tests on both trained and untrained dogs, where the device successfully repelled them using different frequency ranges. The functionality was confirmed by observing that trained dogs reacted to frequencies over 35KHz to 40KHz, while untrained dogs reacted between 20KHz to 30KHz. The working condition of the IoT component is demonstrated by frequency data uploads to a cloud platform, ensuring results are monitored and analyzed.

The crucial technological components in the design of the handheld dog repeller device include the ICNE555 timer IC, which generates square wave pulses for the ultrasonic frequencies, and the piezo buzzer, which emits these frequencies. A potentiometer is used to adjust the frequency, while a Wi-Fi module (ESP8266) facilitates the use of IoT by connecting to a cloud platform to document the frequencies used.

The device's functionality differs between trained and untrained dogs based on their response to different ultrasonic frequency ranges. The trained dog responded to frequencies over 35KHz to 40KHz, while the untrained dog reacted to frequencies in the 20KHz to 30KHz range. This indicates the presence of a frequency gap in the reactions between trained and untrained dogs.

The literature survey played a critical role in the development of the handheld dog repeller by analyzing previous studies related to dog responses to ultrasonic frequencies, as well as other repelling methods. This background knowledge helped in identifying effective ultrasonic frequency ranges and components necessary to design a functional device, ultimately contributing to the device's successful operation.

The document supports the need for developing devices like the handheld dog repeller by citing persistent cases of dog attacks in India and worldwide, indicating that existing methods such as ultrasonic whistles and sprays are insufficient. This creates a demand for alternative solutions that are effective at repelling dogs without harm.

The integration of IoT significantly enhances the functionality of the handheld dog repeller by allowing real-time data collection and analysis. The Wi-Fi module (ESP8266) transmits frequency usage data to the cloud, enabling continuous monitoring and assessment of device effectiveness. This facilitates improvements in design and operation based on empirical data, enhances user feedback, and potentially aids in tailoring frequencies for different dog training and behavior scenarios. Such integration also allows for remote troubleshooting, device updates, and global scalability.

The handheld dog repeller offers several advantages over other dog deterrent methods. It effectively repels dogs without physical harm, uses lightweight components, and does not require precise aiming. Unlike sprays or physical barriers, it does not affect humans or the environment adversely. By using ultrasonic frequencies, the device takes advantage of dogs' sensitive hearing, providing a humane deterrent method. Additionally, the incorporation of IoT allows for tracking and analyzing usage data, potentially improving device efficiency over time.
