Types of Cast Iron and Asbestos Pipes

1. Cast iron soil pipe is used primarily for sanitary and storm drain, waste, and vent piping applications in building construction. It does not have a hub or "bell" on the end. 2. Acid resistant cast iron pipe is made from an alloy of cast iron and silicon. It is widely used where acid waste is discharged, such as in chemical laboratories and industries. 3. Asbestos pipe is made of asbestos fibers and Portland cement. It is remarkably superior for embedment in concrete structures due to having similar material properties.

1. Cast iron soil pipe
Cast iron soil pipe and fittings are used primarily in building construction for sanitary and
storm drain, waste, and vent piping applications. A pipe that doesn’t have a hub or “bell” on the
end. Cast iron pipe is pipe made predominantly from gray cast iron It was historically used as a
pressure pipe for transmission of water, gas and sewage, and as a water drainage pipe during the
17th, 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.

2. Acid resistant cast iron pipe

Made from alloy of cast iron & silicon. It is widely used in chemical laboratories, industries
and other installation where acid waste are being discharge. Basically, this type of pipe is brittle
in character & requires stronger support for each pipe installed horizontally to prevent sagging of
joints.

3. Asbestos pipe
Asbestos pipe is made of asbestos fibers & Portland cement. The thickness of the pipe is
twice as that of the standard cast iron pipe. Asbestos pipe could be used as soil, waste ventilation
& downspout. This kind of pipe is remarkably superior for embedment in concrete structure for
having the same material properties.
4. Bituminous fiber sewer pipe
It is the cheapest among the sewer pipes and is recommended for house sewer and for septic
tank installation. A Bituminous fiber sewer pipe is light in weight, slightly flexible which could
take slight soil movement without danger of cracking or pulling out from its joint. However,
excessive hot water or chemical flow may soften or damage the pipe.

5. Vitrified clay pipe

It is one of the oldest material used for sewer lines. A vitrified clay pipe is made out from
clay, cast into length of 85cm treated with glazing compound and heated in a large kiln under a
very high temperature making it impervious to moisture. It is a durable material for underground
installations like public sewer, house sewer, or storm drain but cannot be laid on unstable ground
base since it is made out of clay.

6. Lead pipe
A pipe that was used by the ancient Egyptians, greeks and romans for its use as soil and
waste pipe. A lead pipe is highly resistant to acid and is suitable for underground installation. It
was never used to convey water for human consumption due to the fact that lead is poisonous and
injurious to human health.
7. Galvanized steel pipe
It is made up from mild steel, drawn to a die and welded and cast into a six meter long
pipe. A galvanized steel pipe is easily corroded by alkaline water and acidic water and is subject
to deposits of salt and lime that gradually accumulate and finally choke the flow of water.
However, it deteriorates faster when used a hot water supply line.

8. Galvanized wrought iron pipe

A steel pipe or wrought-iron pipe, of standard dimensions, which has been galvanized by
coating it with a thin layer of zinc. It is better in quality that the steel pipe for plumbing installation
and tests have shown that wrought iron pipe is more resistant to acid waste than steel pipe.

9. Brass pipe
It is one of the most expensive types of pipes and is made of an alloy or zinc and copper
mixed at 15% and 85% proportion respectively. Its smooth interior surface and high resistance to
acid, a brass pipe is considered to be a superior material for waste and water supply installations.
10. Copper pipe
It is durable and extremely corrosive resistant material and it is easy to install compared
with other types of pipe. The price difference of a copper wire and a steel pipe is very little and its
fittings cost a lot less than steel pipe. It also has 3 types according to Wall Thickness.

K type - It is the most suitable for underground installation and the heaviest.
L type – It is available on both rigid and flexible form and is lighter than the k type. It is commonly
used in residential water supply line and for radiant heating installations.
M type – It is specially designed for a small water supply line and for radiant heating installations.
Moreover, it is the thinnest and only available in its rigid form.

11. Plastic or synthetic pipe

Plastic pipe is a tubular section, or hollow cylinder, made of plastic. It is usually, but not
necessarily, of circular cross-section, used mainly to convey substances which can flow, liquids
and gases (fluids), slurries, powders and masses of small solids. There are two types of Plastic
pipes and they can be classified as either rigid or flexible type. Under Rigid type there are 6 known
categories and under flexible type we have 2 known categories.
12. Stainless steel pipe
Stainless steel pipe is used in areas subject to corrosion and near coastal areas. It is a clean,
durable, corrosion resistant material with a design life expectancy of over fifty years. This type of
pipe is available in both flexible and rigid. It is a good choice in high-temperature environments
and is resistant to UV radiation. These qualities make stainless steel pipe an obvious choice for
many industries.
