English Language Enrichment for XII MIPA & IPS

The document provides explanations about tsunamis through 3 paragraphs. It defines a tsunami as a series of waves generated by rapid displacement of water on a large scale caused by earthquakes, landslides, volcanic eruptions or meteorite impacts. While tsunamis pass unnoticed in deep ocean waters, they take on violent tidal wave characteristics as they approach land. The text clarifies that tsunamis are not related to tides and the term "tidal wave" is misleading. It also explains the Japanese origin of the term "tsunami".

Outdoor Song
(by: Jason Mraz)
Back in the cool, cool air where the sun is shinning
Nothing’s going to stop me
It’s all in the timing
It’s finally again my turn
It’s time to return

‘Cause I won’t stay inside no more

No more
I can’t wait to go
Outdoors

Well open up your door and be like me

Open up your door and then breathe free
And look at all the beauty you’ll feel
Loved, loved, loved, loved

Listen to the music of the wind and the brides sing

We’re just one big family
And all of nature deserves to be
Loved, loved, loved, loved,
Loved

So, I won’t stay inside no more

No more
It can’t wait, I’m sure
There’s need to run and hide
Let’s go explore

Tsunami

A tsunami is a series of waves generated when water in a lake or in the sea is rapidly
displaced on a massive scale. Earthquakes, landslides, volcanic eruptions and large meteorite impacts
all have the potential to generate a tsunami. The effects of a tsunami can range from unnoticeable to
devastating.
The term of tsunami comes from the Japanese language meaning harbour (tsu) and wave
(nami). Although in Japanese tsunami is used for both singular and plural, in English “tsunamis” is
well-established as the plural. The term was created by fisherman who returned to port to find the area
surrounding the harbour devastated, although they had not been aware of any wave in the open water.
A tsunami is not a sub-surface event in the deep ocean; it simply has a much smaller amplitude (wave
heights) offshore, a very long wavelength (often hundreds kilometers long), which is why they
generally pass unnoticed at sea, forming only a passing “hump” in the ocean.
Tsunamis have been historically referred to as “tidal waves” because as they approach land
they take on the characteristics of a violent onrushing tide rather than the sort of cresting waves that
are formed by wind action upon the ocean (with which people are more familiar). However, since they
are not related to tides, the term is considered misleading and its usage is discouraged by
oceanographers.

Tsunamis are characterized by their long wavelengths, often hundreds of kilometers long, and their small amplitude out in the deep ocean, where they go unnoticed. When approaching land, they increase dramatically in height, resembling a violent tide rather than cresting waves, leading to their destructive impact. This transformation contributes to their devastating nature as they can cause significant damage when reaching shore .

The depiction of continual sadness, as seen in phrases like 'my heart there’ll never be a sun,' underscores a persisting feeling of melancholy that enhances the song's emotional impact by creating a sense of perpetual longing or heartbreak. This portrayal makes the emotions more relatable and poignant for the audience, reflecting deep-seated emotional conflict .

The underlying message in the song lyrics is to appreciate what we have before we lose them. This is emphasized by the realization of love only once it's gone, encouraging an awareness of the value of relationships while they are still present .

Explanation texts serve the purpose of explaining why and how phenomena occur, using a structure that typically includes a general statement followed by a sequence of explanations. This format allows the reader to understand complex processes in a logical and systematic way, reflecting the informative nature intended by the text .

Effective strategies for coping with the impact of a tsunami include promptly moving to higher ground or an elevated position, remaining informed through official channels, and having emergency supplies ready. Understanding the natural signs of a tsunami, such as a sudden retreat of water from the shore, can also aid in taking preventive actions .

The term 'tidal wave' is considered misleading for a tsunami because tsunamis are not related to the gravitational effects on tides but are instead caused by seismic activity, such as earthquakes. Their name originates from their harbor-devastating nature rather than any tidal activity, and their action resembles a tide only when they approach the shore, not in their origin .

Emotional expression in art, such as in the lyrics, often captures the intricacies of personal emotions which resonate universally. Phrases like 'rain and tears' serve as metaphors for universal feelings of sorrow and joy, allowing individuals to relate their personal struggles with broader, shared human emotions. This duality enhances the impact of art as a medium for expressing deeply personal yet universally accessible experiences .

The song lyrics use metaphors such as 'dreams come slow and they go so fast' and 'rain and tears' to convey fleeting moments of happiness and persistent sadness. Such metaphors allow listeners to grasp complex emotional states by equating them with more tangible experiences, enhancing the emotional depth and resonance of the lyrics .
