Lesson Sorting Course Math 1-2

Title/Focus
Part 1.2

PROGRAM OF STUDY OUTCOMES

Math 1:

GLO: Describe the characteristics of 3-D objects and 2-D shapes, and analyze the
relationships among them.

SLO: Sort 3-D objects and 2-D shapes, using one attribute, and explain the sorting rule.

Math 2:

GLO: Describe the characteristics of 3-D objects and 2-D shapes, and analyze the
relationships among them.

SLO: Sort 2-D shapes and 3-D objects, using two attributes, and explain the sorting rule.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Grade 1

● At the end of the lesson students will be able to sort 2-D shapes, using one
attribute, and explain the sorting rule.

Grade 2

● At the end of the lesson students will be able to sort 2-D shapes using two
attributes, and explain the sorting rule.

MATERIALS & EQUIPMENT


Materials for Student:

Assorted sorting shapes

Printed sorting mats

Materials for Teacher:

Multiple colours of whiteboard markers

Mini whiteboard

Printed discussion questions

PREPARATION & LOGISTICAL CONSIDERATIONS

Have the shape posters printed and set out around the room.

Make sure there is a mini whiteboard at hand to draw shapes on

Have your discussion questions ready

PROCEDURE

Introduction Time

Working in small groups.

Draw the following shapes on the mini whiteboard. Ensure


at least two shapes are drawn using a different colour

● Small square
● Large triangle
● Medium circle
● Medium trapezoid
● Small right angle triangle

Ask Students to list attributes for the shapes.

Once each shape has at least two attributes each. Ask


students if they see any similar attributes shared by each
shape.

Ask students what objects could be put together because the


objects share attributes.

Introduce the idea to the students that we are sorting the


shapes based on what we call a sorting rule. We determine
the rule based on the attributes we see in the shapes.

Once all objects have been sorted using a one attribute


sorting rule, ask the students to group the objects together
based on a new one attribute sorting rule.

Body Time

Put out the sorting mats as well as a set number of objects


for each student. More or less objects depending on the
challenge required.

Apply a sorting rule and sort the objects into two groups 20 min
based on a sorting rule. Ask the students what they think is
the sorting rule for the given groups.

Repeat as time allows with varying sorting rules.

Conclusion Time

Before letting students go, ask each student if they can think
of any sorting rules they can apply to the classroom? Boy vs
Girls? Grade 1 vs Grade 2? Students vs Teachers? (The
answer to this one would surprise them haha) 5 min

Sorting activity

Notes: Lesson went very well. Students quickly demonstrated understanding of sorting by specific
attributes. Students were able to extend sorting by attributes to a variety of things.
