Tutorial 5

1. Find all local maxima/minima and saddle points of the following functions:
(a) f (x, y) = ex (x2 − y 2 ).
(b) f (x, y) = 2 ln x + ln y − 4x − y.

2. Find all absolute maxima/minima and saddle points of the following functions on the given
domains:
(a) f (x, y) = 2x2 − 4x + y 2 − 4y + 1 on the closed triangular plate bounded by the lines
x = 0, y = 2, y = 2x in the first quadrant.
(b) f (x, y) = x2 + xy + y 2 − 6x on the rectangular plate 0 ≤ x ≤ 5, −3 ≤ y ≤ 3.

3. Find two numbers a and b with a ≤ b such that

Z b
(6 − x − x2 )dx
a

has its largest value.

4. Find the extreme values of f (x, y) = xy subject to the constraint x2 + 2y 2 = 1.

5. Find the points on the curve xy 2 = 54 nearest to the origin.
