Ans. Maria Montessori
Montessori Method of education is based upon observations about childrens effortless ability to
absorb knowledge from their surroundings and in manipulating materials of their interest. The
Montessori method of teaching concentrates on quality rather than quantity. A wide variety of special
equipment of increasing complexity is used to help direct the interests of the child. Montessori
approach believes that learning is a self directed and natural process. In Montessori program children
are allowed to explore the activities and concept on their own. This encourages them to try different
challenges and accelerated their learning experience. Children love engaging themselves in all
activities and Montessori approach is all about exploring and engaging in different activities. Every
student has his/her own area of interest and learning occurs at a comfortable pace for each student
rather than forcing the things which an individual do not enjoy doing.
Since in Montessori approach children are allowed to choose their own activities and work on them
with their group or individually brings out their creativity and enhances the better brain development.
Children learn on their own through different activities, colours , shapes, music etc. Children like and
ordered environment where they get their required materials on their own and they can use and keep
it back , this gives them a sense of safety and security. It has been reported that the Montessori
method of teaching has enabled children to learn to read and write much more quickly and with
greater facility. Montessori method helps children to repeat activities, once they discover certain
techniques for the particular activity / exercise they want to repeat them and gain master over it.
Students who experience a Montessori classroom tend to be more able to manage themselves and
think independently.
A Montessori curriculum focuses on key developmental milestones in children between the ages of
three and five-years-old. Montessori preschool students enjoy a classroom and curriculum designed
around their specific needs and abilities that allows them to explore and learn at their own pace and
on their own terms. Since young learners enjoy activity based learning Montessori is most appropriate
method of learning.
Friedrich Froebel
Froebel’s Kindergarten concept of “ a place for children” meant a place where young learners growth,
development, and learning should not depend on any activity which is suggested by parents or
teachers but he/she should carry out his own impulses and decisions. Education is a process of
individual growth. Young learners cannot concentrate on a particular object or topic for a long time
without getting themselves engaged in that particular topic or object. They are curious learners and
enjoy doing things on their own hence involving and teaching them the topic through different
activities will be the best way for young children.
Children love to play games, physical activities , loves expression, singing songs/ rhymes. Froebels
theory developed a series of gifts and materials that can be used for Kindergarten. Children need to be
given choices, allowed to make errors, decisions and offered sensitive help as and when it is needed,
This will help children to learn in ways which are right for each of them as individuals. All the materials
in this theory had a physical appearance and also had a symbolic meaning. All the activities were
designed to assist sensory, physical development and socializing. Learning through games and songs
encourage a child to interact with others confidently and gives them pleasure. Teaching styles and
froebel’s gift such as blocks, shapes, balls is fun and natural way of teaching young minds without
giving them just theoretical knowledge and at the same time this techniques never demotivates a
child from learning.
We do our best work with helping children to develop and learn what they find of interest, and what
they show us they would be interested to learn. This is the base on which we can build what we need
children to know, understand and learn in order to participate fully in their community and the wider
world.
