Chapter 1
1. How much is one rupee worth? (pg.4)
For India (Rupee ₹) , it is $17.240 dollars.
2. “Never saw a clean slate” Why not? (pg.5)
Because if they clean then, they will be free to go home.
Chapter 2
1. Why do you think Karim got to go to the cinema? (pg.10)
Probably because he was older than the other children, he had another
kind of job, and he was kind of close to the masters. The people saw that
the cinema was a thing for rich guys.
2. Why do you think the new boy wasn’t afraid? (pg.12)
Because the new boy could have lived it on another place, Or the new boy
was a brave guy
Chapter 3
1. What do you predict the “tomb” is? (pg. 17)
I think that the tomb is a type of punishment for the people that don’t work
well.
2. Reading this chapter, we can see some sexism in the book. How does sexism
violate human rights? (pg. 16-17)
Mistreating children like doing things that hurt and harm the children by
doing this they violate the women’s rights. The CO of the factor can put a
bad punishment
The children start to think about running away. What factors might
interfere with this plan? (pg. 21)
If Hussain khan see the guy running the punishment will be so bad and

Chapter 4
1. Iqbal is especially talented in making rugs and the children question why he
has been sold in the past if he has this talent. Karim says (of Iqbal has been
sold): “Of course I know, but I can’t tell you.”
Do you think Karim really knows? Explain. (pg. 26-27)
Yes, because karim is a next people of Iqbal and is the people that now
more about iqbal
2. The children discuss some of their hopes and fond memories. Why are these
topics important when going through a difficult experience (for the children
or for us in our lives)? (pg. 29-31)
Discussing with someone or talking about their past or their feelings can
release new emotions or can make the person even sadder depending on
their past

1. Why do you think Iqbal destroyed his carpet?
Because he wants to show for the others that he was a brave guy
Chapter 6
1. It seems as if the foreigners simply come and go from the “factory” with
no real reaction. Do you think they reacted at all in any ways after they
left? Explain.
Factory visitors had a frightened reaction, as it is not common to see
children enslaved in a factory.
2. Do you think the mistress saw as the children sneak out? Explain. What
would this say about her character? (p.46)
Yes, she saw, but as she has a good character (carater) she let the boys
run away
Chapter 7
1. Why do the children seem to risk so much to show compassion to Iqbal?
Explain.
Because the children are grateful for the things that Iqbal made for him
2. What is dysentery? (quickly research this) (pg. 52 )
Dysentery is an infection in your intestines that causes bloody diarrhea. It
can be caused by a parasite or bacteria.
Chapter 8
1. The children all “volunteer” to go to the “tomb”. What does this say
about their relationships with one another? What does this say about
their feelings toward the master?
That the kids trust one another, and this make a really good relationship
that they can talk about their feelings with one another

1. Why is the inability to read and write such a problem when it comes to
reinforcing human rights? How are literacy and human rights
connected?
Because the poor people don’t have the reading and writing because
they studied in poor schools. Making you don’t trust in the guy because
they don’t have a good neology.

1. How come the children seem to be united after being taught by Maria?
They seem to be united because maria wants to show that it doesn't
matter what they do because deep down they are friends.
Chapter 11
1. The kite string breaks – what might this symbolize? (pg. 90)
They stayed there so long that when they finally had freedom they didn't
know what to do. The kite string breaks they are free to go.
Chapter 12
1. As the children and Eshan call more attention to the issue of child
labour, they come under threat from different people, even to the point
where they could get hurt or killed. What makes some people willing to
put their lives on the line for a cause?
What makes people put their lives at risk for a cause, is that they really
know what it's be in that place and also want justice for and show an
brave example for the others
Chapter 13
1. In this chapter, Iqbal appears frightened. What does this say about his
character?
this says that no matter how brave and strong he is, we have to
remember that he is also a child and can be scared and afraid.
Chapter 14
1. Iqbal is invited to speak and go to University in the United States and
Fatima is allowed to return home. What new challenges might Iqbal and
Fatima now face?
Iqbal and maria are going to go through several challenges with society
and human rights that they fight so much.
