Salt Water vs. Lithium Battery Fan Output

The document describes an experiment comparing a salt water powered fan, lithium battery powered fan, and normal portable fan. Researchers built the lithium fan by replacing the power source of a remote control car and connecting the fan motor. They built the saltwater fan using a circuit with popsicle sticks wrapped in foil as electrodes in a saltwater solution. Testing involved measuring how far each fan could blow a paper or crumpled paper ball. Results showed the portable fan performed best, blowing objects farther than the other fans, as its power output was stronger.

Salt water powered fan and a lithium battery powered fan which can produce stronger wind than the normal portable fan

Abstract

This research was a qualitative study using only simple materials found at home and other electrical

appliances. This study set out to determine if a salt water or lithium battery powered fan is effective on

creating a stronger wind current than the traditional portable and chargeable fan. Building the lithium

battery fan was simple because a few components will only be replaced, building the saltwater fan was

harder than expected due to many factors. The first attempt did not go well as expected because of the low

conductivity, the second attempt did pretty well but it relies on a 9v battery. The experiments all had 3

trials, all recorded data were recorded accurately no bias or manipulation. The results came as expected

that both fans had no chance on beating the portable fan since both power outputs were generally weak

compared to the traditional chargeable fan

Salt water powered fan and a lithium battery powered fan which can produce stronger wind than the normal portable fan

INTRODUCTION

Normal portable fans are very useful, the only problem is it’s strength to produce strong

currentsof wind. Using the technology observed in salt water powered circuits and the traditional

lithium battery powered circuits, manufacturing a fan that can create a strong wind current

stronger than the normal portable fan. A fan stronger than the normal portable fan will be very

useful especially during summer and hot days.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to see if the lithium battery fan or salt watered fan can create a stronger

wind current than the portable fan.

This study aims to:

-ratio of salt in water to make the water a good conducting liquid

-Effectiveness of the fans

-Type of salt used if salt water is not present

Significance of the Study

Our innovation will help the community, specifically people who are suffering in very hot

temperature. You can just mix salt with water or buy AA batteries. And people will not worry

about charging the portable fan.

Salt water cells in a salt water car (Franco Normani):

The salt water provides the electrolyte used in a chemical reaction inside a fuel cell. This

chemical reaction creates electricity, similar to how a battery creates electricity. This electricity

runs a small motor which powers the car.

Building a salt water circuit (Services of homesciencetools):

When you put salt in water, the water molecules pull the sodium and chlorine ions apart so

they are floating freely. These ions are what carry electricity through water with an electric

current. In short, salt water can help to produce electricity. While this can be done on a large-

scale, let's try a small scale science project to see how it works

How to build a small fan:

With supplies readily available at home, a few recyclable items, some batteries and

a small toy motor, you can create a battery-powered electric fan for a science project. What’s

even more appealing is that it doesn't have to break the bank, making the project an

affordable, but interesting endeavor.

LumenLearning:

An electrolyte is any salt or ionizable molecule that, when dissolved in solution, will give

that solution the ability to conduct electricity. This is because when a salt dissolves, its

dissociated ions can move freely in solution, allowing a charge to flow.

METHODOLOGY

DESCRIPTION OF METHOD OR PROCEDURES

A. Preparation phase

In conducting the experiment the researchers gathered all the equipment needed

for the experiment. The researchers grouped all materials and began building the

lithium battery fan.

B. Lithium fan

The researchers removed the power source of the remote controlled car for the

experiment. The researchers grouped all materials and began building the lithium

battery fan. The researches connected the fan motor with the power source with wires

and soldered it in.

C. saltwater fan

The saltwater fan was based on figure at first the motor was removed on the

second motor, and a salt water conduction circuit was used to make the fan. The

saltwater circuit was created like any other circuits but the researches added popsicle

sticks wrapped with foil so it can conduct current. Since the output is low the

researchers tested it on a LED instead

D. Testing part

To test the fans the researchers turned off all the air conditioning of the room so

that there will be no air and interruption on the experiment. The researcher then placed

the fan 7cm away from the wall and ½ cm above ground of the blade. The researches

added a small elevation on the paper so that the paper will be blown away easier. The

next test the researchers made the fans blow a paper ball which was composed of 4

paper sheets all crumpled together the researchers had to drop the ball since the fans can

barely move the ball if it is on a potential state.

Observations during trials.

The data shows that the lithium battery powered fan can blow a stronger wind

current than the 2 other fans. Both fans blew exceptionally well but the lithium battery
Salt water powered fan and a lithium battery powered fan which can produce stronger wind than the normal portable fan

powered fan blew a little stronger and based on the observations during the experiment the

salt water fan had no chance since it cannot make the motor rotate due to its weak output.

On the results of table 3 the saltwater circuit can barely move the motor of the fan which

deemed useless on the experiment the only thing the researchers can do is just measure its

ratio.

DISCUSSIONS

The result of the research revealed that the lithium batteries have a stronger

electrical output compared to the chargeable battery of the fan. The problem of the lithium

battery is its disposability since the common battery can be replaced easily and the battery

that is disposed unprofessionally can lead to serious environmental damages. The ratio of

salt on water is 3:1 every 3 grams of salt it can make 1 ml of water into a conducting liquid.

CONCLUSIONS

The researchers concluded that the lithium battery powered fan has a stronger

electrical output compared to the chargeable battery of the fan and can create a stronger

wind current. While the saltwater fan is weaker compared to both fans and was deemed not

a viable option. The researchers also concluded that the ratio of salt on water is 3:1 every 3

grams of salt it can make 1 ml of water into a conducting liquid.

RECOMMENDATIONS

The researchers does not recommend the use of saltwater to power a small fan since the

motor of a small fan is not strong enough already. If people plan on recreating the research

proponents must find a strong enough motor that can power a fan just by using saltwater.

The researchers recommend to study on how to create a strong enough motor that is

powered by salt water so that it can power easily power a fan.

Common questions

Despite the potential low-cost benefits of salt water fans, the researchers did not recommend them for practical use due to their inadequate power output. The salt water circuit's lack of capability to produce sufficient electricity to power a fan motor effectively rendered it impractical. Enhanced motor development is needed before considering salt water as a feasible energy source for fans .

Constructing a salt water powered fan was found to be more challenging due to factors such as low conductivity and the weak power output, which failed to adequately power the fan motor. In contrast, building a lithium battery powered fan was simpler, as it required only minor modifications to existing components .

Lithium batteries provide a higher electrical output than portable chargeable batteries; however, their environmental impact can be significant if they are not disposed of properly. Improper disposal of lithium batteries can lead to environmental pollution, thus their use poses long-term environmental risks compared to rechargeable options which might offer more sustainable recycling pathways .

Lithium battery powered fans have a stronger electrical output compared to salt water powered fans, allowing them to produce a stronger wind current. The research concluded that the lithium battery fan had a superior performance in terms of wind production, while the salt water fan was significantly weaker and not considered a viable option .

Salt water circuits produce electricity by utilizing sodium and chlorine ions from dissolved salt, which conduct electricity through ionic movement. However, the study indicated that the electricity produced is typically low, limiting its ability to power devices like small fans. The primary limitation is the insufficient power output, which was evident in the experiment where the motor failed to operate effectively .

The experimental setup involved testing each fan under controlled conditions, such as turning off all air conditioning to avoid external influences on the wind measurements. Fans were placed precisely in relation to surfaces to standardize distance and height. Controls included three trials for each test, with thorough documentation to ensure unbiased result recording. This meticulous procedure ensured accurate comparisons between the fan types .

Constructing a lithium battery powered fan involved utilizing components from a remote-controlled car, such as the power source, and connecting it to a small fan motor with wires. The components required minor modifications, and the motor was soldered to the power source to complete the circuitry. This made the lithium battery fan construction relatively simple compared to the salt water variant .

The salt concentration is critical in creating a conductive liquid, with a required ratio of 3:1 grams of salt to milliliters of water to achieve optimal conductivity. This ratio allows ions to move freely in solution, enabling an electric current .

Using salt water as an energy source for small fans is ineffective based on the research findings. The low power output of the salt water circuit was insufficient to power the fan motor effectively. The research recommended against using salt water for this purpose until a stronger motor can be developed that works with the available power .

Effectiveness was measured by observing the distance paper and paper balls traveled when blown by the fans. The lithium battery fan proved most effective with average distances of 59.7 cm for paper and 34.6 cm for paper balls. In comparison, the traditional portable fan fell short, while the salt water variant was too weak to yield significant results. These measurements highlighted the superior performance of the lithium battery fan .
