COURSE DESCRIPTION
This subject covers various contemporary arts practices of the region where the school is
located. It aims to provide students with an appreciation of a broad range of styles in the various
disciplines with consideration on their elements and principles, and engage them to an
integrative approach in studying arts. Through this subject, students will broaden and acquire
the necessary creative tools that open opportunities in pursuing their individual career goals and
aspirations
Contemporary Philippine Arts from the Regions is designed to stimulate the environment of the
internet. This is to make a challenging and complex subject less intimidating and easier access.
As this module unfolds, we encourage you to imagine yourselves going through an adventure
and a journey of exploration. Sometimes, the Journey may be rough and you will find yourself
lost in the many twist and turns of Contemporary Art. But keep on going; make sure you do not
lose sight of the signposts that will guide you back to the main routes.

1 Define art
A - amorphous, shapeless, no form or shape, it is no standardized form or shape, just like water
when you pour it in a star shaped bottle, it will morph to that star, we cannot classify if it art or it
is not, it is only the appreciation that we can base off of
R - reality, even though sometimes reality is twisted still there reality to it, like expressionism and
impressionism, (impressionism) what you see is what you get, inspired by the reality, objects,
color, structure, anatomy, (expressionism) it may vary for the person, it depends on the person’s
liking, interpretation and personal through their own expression.
T - tradition, art stays in our veins, art is coherent in every human person, we art in our mind and
hearts, it has been passed from one generation through the next, prior to pre colonial era, art
already existed, even prior to human existence there was art.
2 Purposes:
We all have different perceptions of art, for some it is a creation, can be the act of bringing an
idea to reality, when you think of something here is the reality but sometimes there is a thin line
between expectation and reality. Sometimes the expectation does not meet the reality. Your idea
can be transferred into a reality, you can draw a dog for you but others see it as a worm.
Idea and reality - two big concepts of art
Art to some - can be an expression to reach for their audience, to express their feelings. You can
draw a person but you perceive them as bad so you put fangs and horns, that may provoke
feelings.
Example:
The Kiss of Life
The guy got electrocuted, and his companion tried to save him by giving him CPR until the
medics came, earning the title The Kiss of Life, no one died, both are saved.
There’s more to it: they would have different interpretations: disgusting, act of kindness, love, etc.
It triggers our insights about art.
Art has diff. Purposes, people create aft to record and express ideas and feelings, these ideas
being written (even the unwritten can be art), we scrutinize art as a purpose, what is their value?
3. Types of Functions
Personal function - art is created to express thoughts, serves the purpose of personal function,
art is a platform for those who can't express themselves through words. “Actions speak louder
than words” even words cannot justify our feelings. We can convert these feelings in a creative
way.
Social function - it triggers your emotion and the ability to judge, when we dig deeper into our
thoughts, it can be clear that we are just seeing the tip of the iceberg. When art serves its
purpose in a social aspect, artists may produce art with a sheer sense of identity. (An example is
festivals).
They entertain people to the use of their craft (like seeing, performing, etc) to leave other people
appreciate their craft hence social function
Spiritual function - it ecompasses the right to believe and not to believe, about the destiny of life
controlled by another power.
Art produced for this purpose that may produce sheer beliefs for human beings.
Like olympics, all of that true praise zeus.
It ignites to the mind of the artist to a particular concept, undergoing process to the aftermath
Physical function - Innovative and creative ways, (ex. diy)
Educational function - when art is produced on artwork, such as symbols to impart knowledge.
Symbols of goals of the society when we sustain this we can live a better life.
1. In Terms of history, how do you define the contemporary? How's It
Different from the“traditional”or“modern”?
If we talk in terms of Art History,Contemporary Art can be defined as art
produced by artists living today. And Modern Art, produced between
the American colonial period to the Post-war [Link] Modern
artists continue to produce work till today.
2. Explain the meaning of contemporary art: collaborative, integrative, and
process- oriented. How do these mediums and techniques differentiate
contemporary arts from the“traditional”and“modern”?
Contemporary art is collaborative, meaning that the art was produced
by a group of people,integrative means combining the ideas and form it
as one and powerful art,and process-oriented was being aware
intellectually and emotionally as the art was being produced.
3. How did the collaborative, integrative and process-oriented characters
of contemporary art become more concrete through the process you
went through in the group activity?
We’ve never done any group activity, but I think that these
characteristics of contemporary art became more concrete because of
the fact that most of the materials they could use have already been
provided as of now, and they could easily illustrate them either in
expressionism or impressionism.
4. Artists do not always use new media, such as installations and mixed
media. What makes them “contemporary” anyway? Explain your
answers through historical,stylistic, and cultural overviews
What makes them contemporary is that, historically, the art flourished
and became more refined as the time went by and it has been seen in
the subsequent era. Stylistic, where the work has been revolved
because of the new concept created. And cultural, very useful to know
where the artists are coming from and the circumstances of making
disseminating their art

It’s the knowledge about art as a whole.
2. What do you find the least beneficial to you in this module?
Well most of the topics were fine but I guess the least benefit it would give me is that I got to waste the
time to edit these answer sheets separately from the module.
