Chapter II

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the research design, method, data gathering procedures

and statistical treatment of data.

Research Design

This study employed the case study of research problem and procedure involving

the control or manipulating or condition for the purpose of studying the relative effect.

Research Subject

The subjects of the study are the residents of Brgy. Poblacion, Lapuyan,

Zamboanga del Sur who are willingly participated and some officials who volunteered in

our study.

Research Method

The descriptive survey method of research, involving the use of questionnaire

and documentary analysis will be utilized in conducting this study. The descriptive

method of research will be a great emphasis and used in order to come up with a

substantial, accurate, and fully accessible data for the study. Descriptive method is a

purposive process of data gathering, analysing, classifying, and tabulating data about

prevailing conditions, practices, beliefs, processes, trends, and cause effect

relationships and then adequate and accurate interpretation about such data with or

without aid of statistical treatment.

Research Instrument

The data gathering instrument that will be used in this study is a survey

questionnaire. Equipped with the knowledge gained from readings, the researchers

constructed the questionnaire.  In the preparation of the instrument, the requirements in

the designing of good data collection instrument were considered. For instance,

statement describing the situations or issues pertaining was toned down to

accommodate the knowledge preparedness of the respondents. Open-ended options

were provided to accommodate to free formatted views related to the topics or issues.

In this way, the instrument is authorized to obtain valid responses of the residents.. In

addition the instrument will be validated by the LGU and Barangay Officials before it laid

on to the study. Some copies will be produced and issued to the target respondents.

After a week, the copies of the questionnaire will be gathered. The responses who

answered the specific questions will be tabulated and presented in distribution table.

They were analysed and interpreted using certain suitable answers.

Data Gathering Procedure

The first step before going to the testing proper is to make a request letter. Upon

approval, the researcher retrieves the request letter. In administering the questionnaire,

the researcher was use the time allotted by the Brgy. Captain who is with us, guiding

and helping to commence the survey. After data gathering, the researcher now

collected it for tallying the scores and to apply the statistical treatment to be used with

the study.
Statistical Treatment of the Data

Responses to the questionnaire were statistically analyzed with the data

requirements of the study. Respondents were statistically analyzed with the data

instruments of the study. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distribution is

considered.

Data gathered are categorized by the corresponding answers

of each question.

Data gathered are coded according to it's description.

Data are tabulated, calculated and analyzed.

Ethical considerations include informed consent, confidentiality, and the respectful treatment of respondents. Ensuring consent involves explaining the purpose of the study, voluntary participation, and safeguarding personal data. The involvement of community leaders, like Barangay Officials, suggests efforts to align with cultural norms and gain community trust, underscoring the study's integrity and respect for participant rights .

The rationale for using a descriptive survey method is to achieve a substantial, accurate, and fully accessible dataset. This method allows for a purposive process of data gathering, analyzing, classifying, and tabulating data about prevailing conditions, practices, beliefs, processes, trends, and cause-effect relationships. The descriptive survey method offers adequate and accurate interpretation without necessarily needing advanced statistical treatments, making it suitable for capturing the intricate socio-cultural dynamics in Brgy. Poblacion .

After collection, data are categorized based on the corresponding answers to each question. This involves coding the gathered data according to their descriptions to facilitate ease of analysis and ensure consistency. This methodological step is essential in transforming raw data into structured information that can be further analyzed statistically .

Validating a survey instrument with local government officials, like the LGU and Barangay Officials, ensures that the questions are culturally sensitive, relevant, and acceptable to the community. This validation helps in obtaining trustworthy and unbiased data and boosts the respondents' confidence in participating, as they see it endorsed by familiar authorities .

Descriptive statistics, such as frequency distribution, play a crucial role in summarizing and presenting the collected data in a meaningful way. They offer a baseline for understanding basic patterns and trends within the responses from the study, allowing for initial insights and conclusions about the prevailing conditions, practices, and beliefs within Brgy. Poblacion .

Researchers ensure the suitability of their survey instrument by toning down statements to accommodate the knowledge preparedness of the respondents. They provide open-ended options for more free-formatted views and validate the instrument with the LGU and Barangay Officials before application. This comprehensive approach allows for obtaining valid responses reflective of the residents' perspectives .

The case study design differs from other methodologies by focusing on studying the relative effect of control or manipulated conditions. It allows for an in-depth examination of specific instances, such as the particular socio-economic or cultural environment in Brgy. Poblacion, unlike broader surveys or experiments which may cover less contextual detail. This approach helps to understand the unique circumstances or phenomena within a localized area versus more generalizable findings from other methods .

The crucial procedural step before conducting the survey is writing and obtaining approval for a request letter. This is necessary to gain formal permission, ensuring the study is sanctioned by relevant authorities. It facilitates coordination and support, exemplified by the Barangay Captain's role, ensuring the smooth administration of the survey and adherence to protocol .

The main challenges of using frequency distribution include the potential oversimplification of data and loss of nuanced insights, as this method primarily identifies general trends rather than complex relationships. Frequency distribution may not account for underlying variables affecting responses, potentially limiting the depth of analysis when exploring cause-effect relationships in a dataset like that of Brgy. Poblacion .

Using both open-ended and structured questions is significant as it combines the strengths of both qualitative and quantitative data collection. Structured questions allow for easy data quantification and statistical analysis, while open-ended questions provide depth and flexibility, enabling respondents to express their views freely. This hybrid approach enriches the data set, offering comprehensive insights into the residents' perspectives in Brgy. Poblacion .
