Aloe Vera in Hand Sanitizer Study

This document presents a science investigatory project that examines the effectiveness of Aloe barbadensis as an ingredient in homemade hand sanitizers. The study aims to compare homemade sanitizers containing Aloe to store-bought varieties and determine if Aloe provides similar protective qualities at a lower cost. The procedure for making the Aloe sanitizer is described. Leaves were treated with the homemade and store-bought sanitizers, then observed to see which kept the leaf more moisturized over time.

ABSTRACT

The researcher’s main purpose in conducting this study is to help create a product
which is cheaper and could use the same quality as the one through the use of Aloe
Barbadensis. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of Aloe Barbadensis
as an additional ingredient to homemade hand sanitizers. It also helps the
researcher determine the similarities and differences of the two products have by
comparing their qualities. The procedure in making this product is simple. Put 2
liters of water in a container, then put preservatives and mix it for 30 seconds.
Then you Put alcohol and mix slowly with your spoon or whisk to ensure that the
alcohol is evenly distributed throughout the product. Afterwards we stir in five
drops of an essential oil, if you're using it. This is entirely optional and is only
meant to improve the scent of the sanitizer. Then put colorant (as desire to how
light or dark you like). Then mix it. Then we put the neutralizer little by little mix
it slowly for 1 minute then wait for 10 minutes before you put into desired bottle or
packaging. Then we apply the aloe vera hand sanitizer to a leaf and apply normal
store bought hand sanitizer to a leaf and compare the two and see which one stay
moisturized the longest.

The methodology for preparing Aloe Barbadensis hand sanitizer involves mixing water, preservatives, and alcohol in a sequence to ensure proper distribution. By stirring the alcohol slowly into the mixture with a spoon or whisk, the process ensures even distribution of the alcohol throughout the product. This careful mixing is crucial as it ensures each part of the sanitizer has the necessary antiseptic properties. The subsequent addition of a neutralizer and waiting period ensures stability and homogeneity of the final product, contributing to its efficacy .

The addition of essential oils in Aloe Barbadensis hand sanitizers is beneficial as it enhances scent, increases user enjoyment, and might provide additional antimicrobial properties depending on the oil source. However, it is considered optional because the primary function of hand sanitizer, which is disinfection, is carried out by alcohol and Aloe Barbadensis itself. Essential oils do not necessarily improve the core effectiveness of the product but are mainly for personal preference and enhanced sensory experience .

The study's focus on comparing moisturizing properties stems from a need to address common user concerns about skin dryness caused by frequent sanitizer use, particularly ones containing alcohol. Aloe Barbadensis is well-known for its soothing and hydrating properties, making it an ideal candidate to mitigate these effects. By demonstrating its superior moisturizing capability compared to commercial alternatives, the study supports the argument for Aloe vera-based formulations as both effective and skin-friendly options .

The use of Aloe Barbadensis in hand sanitizers aligns with current trends in personal care product formulation that prioritize natural, plant-based ingredients over synthetic chemicals. This shift is driven by consumer demand for transparent, safe, and environmentally friendly products that support wellness and sustainability. Aloe Barbadensis, known for its moisturizing and soothing properties, fits seamlessly into this trend by offering these benefits without harmful side effects, thus catering to health-conscious and eco-aware customers .

The research indicates that homemade Aloe Barbadensis hand sanitizers potentially offer superior moisturizing effects compared to commercial store-bought products. This is because Aloe Barbadensis naturally retains moisture and reduces skin dryness thanks to its natural compounds like acemannan. The comparison by applying both sanitizers on a leaf and observing which stays moisturized longest suggests that the Aloe-based sanitizer helps maintain moisture for a more extended period, providing better skin health benefits .

The study emphasizes the societal impact by showing how Aloe Barbadensis can be used to create accessible and affordable hand sanitizers, particularly crucial during times of high demand like the COVID-19 pandemic. By reducing costs and providing a simple at-home formulation, this approach empowers individuals and communities to maintain hygiene without financial strain. This accessibility ensures broader public health safety, particularly for economically disadvantaged populations who might struggle with the costs of commercial products .

Potential limitations in the methodology of this study include a lack of controlled experimental conditions to rigorously compare the antiseptic effectiveness of Aloe Barbadensis hand sanitizer. The use of a simple comparison via leaf application may not fully encompass factors impacting efficacy, such as variations in application techniques by different users or environmental influences on the results. Furthermore, the study might not account for differences in concentrations of active ingredients versus commercial products, which could affect performance outcomes .

The procedural simplicity in making Aloe Barbadensis hand sanitizer contributes to its cost-effectiveness primarily by minimizing production complexities and ingredient costs. The process only involves mixing basic household ingredients like alcohol and optionally, essential oils, without needing specialized equipment or costly additives. This simplicity allows individuals to make effective sanitizers at home with potentially lower costs than purchasing commercial products, leveraging Aloe Barbadensis as a functional and accessible ingredient .

The study highlights the significance of using Aloe Barbadensis as a sustainable ingredient by emphasizing its natural abundance and its dual role in health promotion and environmental sustainability. As a plant-derived ingredient, it reduces reliance on synthetic moisturizers and additives found in commercial products. Moreover, Aloe Barbadensis cultivation is generally eco-friendly, requiring less water and chemicals compared to other crops, which supports sustainable practices. This plant-based approach appeals to environmentally conscious consumers who prefer natural personal care products .

The effectiveness of Aloe Barbadensis in homemade hand sanitizers, compared to commercial products, can be attributed to its natural moisturizing properties that keep the skin hydrated, which is crucial in maintaining skin health after repeated use. Aloe vera contains compounds such as acemannan that promote moisture retention and skin healing. Additionally, when combined properly with alcohol, Aloe Barbadensis can offer similar antiseptic properties to commercial hand sanitizers. The inclusion of optional essential oils also enhances scent and adds potential antimicrobial benefits, making the homemade version comparable to commercial options .
