Water In Fuel (WIF) Sensor Circuit
DESCRIPTION
The WIF sensor is attached to the fuel filter. The WIF sensor sends a signal
to the electronic control module (ECM) when a set volume of water has
accumulated in the fuel filter.
COMPONENT LOCATION
The WIF sensor is installed in the bottom or side of the fuel filter, which is
located on the intake side of the cylinder head approximately midengine.
TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS
Step 1A) Turn key switch ON, drain the water from the fuel filter and read the fault codes using the
diagnostic tool.
Fault Code 418 inactive?
Yes - Go to 2A No - Drain water from the fuel filter
Go to 2A
Step 2A) Connect all components. Turn key switch ON and disable the fault code. Start the engine and let
idle for 1 minute. Verify that Fault Code. 418 is inactive, using the diagnostic tool.
Fault Code 418 inactive?
Yes - Go to 2B No - return to troubleshooting steps or contact local
Cummins Authorized Repair Location if all steps
have been completed and checked again

Yes - Repair is complete No - Troubleshoot any remaining active fault codes
with appropriate troubleshooting steps.
