Troubleshooting Cummins Fault Code 298

This document describes troubleshooting steps for fault code 298 related to an OEM pressure sensor circuit on a Cummins engine. The steps include inspecting wiring and connectors for damage, checking sensor voltage and resistance, and measuring resistance values throughout the circuit to diagnose issues like open circuits, short circuits, or faulty sensors/harnesses. Once issues are resolved, the steps verify the fault code is cleared before concluding the repair.

OEM Pressure Sensor Circuit

DESCRIPTION
The OEM sensor signal is used by the electronic control module
(ECM) to monitor the OEM pressure. The OEM pressure is used by
the ECM in one of two ways: 1. The ECM can shut down the engine
based on an OEM pressure input value exceeding or falling below a
customer-specified value. 2. The ECM can control a device (dual-
output driver A and driver B) based on the value of the OEM
pressure. A sensor that has failed low can be caused by shorts to
ground on the signal wire or an internally grounded (faulty) sensor.
The resistance of all pressure sensors varies with the pressure.
Refer to the OEM troubleshooting and repair manual for
specifications.

COMPONENT LOCATION
The location varies with the OEM. Refer to the OEM manual.

TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS
Step 1A) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the OEM pressure sensor. Inspect the
OEM harness and sensor connector pins for the following:
• Bent or broken pins
• Pushed back or expanded pins
• Corroded pins
• Moisture in or on the connector
• Dirt or debris in or on the connector pins

No damaged pins?

Yes - Go to 1B No - Repair or replace the OEM harness or the OEM

pressure sensor
Go to 4A

Step 1B) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the OEM pressure sensor. Check the
resistance of the OEM pressure sensor.

Voltage between (+)0.5 to 4.5 VDC?

Yes -Go to 2A No - Replace the OEM pressure sensor, or repair

OEM pressure sensor voltage source/wiring
Go to 4A

Step 2A) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the OEM pressure sensor.
Disconnect the OEM harness from the ECM. Inspect the OEM harness and OEM harness connector pins for
the following:
• Bent or broken pins
• Pushed back or expanded pins
• Corroded pins
• Moisture in or on the connector
• Dirt or debris in or on the connector pins

No damaged pins?

Yes - Go to 2B No - Repair or replace the OEM harness

Go to 4A

Step 2B) Turn key switch ON and read the fault codes using the diagnostic tool.

Fault Code 298 active?

Yes - Go to 2C No - Repair is complete

Go to 4B

Step 2C) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the ECM. Disconnect the OEM
harness from the OEM pressure sensor. Check for an open circuit in the OEM harness. Measure the
resistance from pin 48 of the OEM harness connector to the appropriate pin of the OEM pressure sensor
connector.

Less than 10 ohms?

Yes - Go to 2D No - Replace the OEM harness

Go to 4A

Step 2D) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the ECM. Disconnect the OEM
harness from the OEM pressure sensor. Check for a short circuit from the signal pin to all other pins.
Measure the resistance from pin 48 of the OEM harness connector to all other pins in the connector.

More than 100k ohms?

Yes - Go to 2E No - Replace the OEM harness

Go to 4A

Step 2E) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the ECM. Disconnect the OEM
harness from the OEM pressure sensor. Check for a short circuit to ground in the signal wire. Measure the
resistance from pin 48 of the OEM harness connector to engine block ground.

More than 100k ohms?

Yes - Go to 3A No - Replace the OEM harness

Go to 4A

Step 3A) Turn key switch OFF and check for appropriate ECM response. Disconnect the OEM interface
harness from the ECM. Turn key switch ON and read the fault codes using the diagnostic tool.

Fault Code 298 inactive and Fault Code 297 active?

Yes - Go to 4A No - Replace the ECM

Go to 4A

Step 4A) Connect all components and disable the fault code. Start the engine, and let idle for 1 minute.
Verify that Fault Code 298 is inactive.

Fault Code 298 inactive?

Yes - Go to 4B No - Return to the troubleshooting steps or contact

local Cummins Authorized Repair Location if all
steps have been completed and checked again
Go to 1A

Step 4B) Connect all components and clear inactive fault codes using the diagnostic tool.

All fault codes cleared?

Yes - Repair is complete No - Troubleshoot any remaining active fault codes

with appropriate troubleshooting steps.
