GEC 2: Readings in Philippine History 1

LEARNING GUIDE

Week No.: __13__

TOPIC: Biography of Prominent Filipino People

EXPECTED COMPETENCIES

By the end of this learning guide, the students should be able to conduct a
historiographic study on the lives of prominent Filipino People throughout the
country’s history.

CONTENT

Studying history is always focused on history of nations and different

collectives (Candelaria & Alporha, 2016). This would also involve studying the life of
individuals whose legacies left marks in the history of a country. Life history is an
oft-neglected subdiscipline of history because it is seen as trivial to larger narratives
of nations, societies, and civilizations. Students should realize that individuals make
up societies and individual actions can cause large-scale social changed.
There are many prominent people in Philippine history that has contributed to
its growth as a nation. These people come from different social, economic,
educational, religious, and philosophical backgrounds. Yet, their words and actions
contributed to the changes that shaped our nation today.

Doing a Biographical Research

Life histories are records of individuals’ personal experiences and the

connections between them and past social events, while auto or biography treats these
accounts not as established facts but as social constructions requiring further
investigation and reinterpretation (Payne & Payne, 2004).
By doing this, a researcher is attempting to reconstruct the major events in the
life of an individual (Dezin; Plummer as cited in Payne & Payne, 2004). Events in this
kind of research does not necessarily follow a generic organization of the stages from
childhood to old age. The purpose of this is to see how experiences and events come
together to establish the influences of the research subject. Instruments for collecting
data in this kind of study would include interviews and consolidating primary sources
found in printed and audio-visual materials.
