Re: Ms. Riya Ray

DOB: 21 March 1998
Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to refer Ms. Riya Ray who has recently delivered her first child at Women’s College
Hospital last 22nd of February. She requires short-term emergency accommodation and support
services from you following her discharge today.

Ms. Ray is living with his current boyfriend, Anton Campbell, since August 2017, but he is not
the father of the child. Ms. Ray does not have any relatives near her place, as her parents died
18 months ago, her sister lives overseas and her aunt lives four hours away, but stays in touch
with her through call.

Mr. Campbell is verbally abusive, and therefore, she does not want to live with him. Additionally,
her parents died in an accident and had depression since then, but haven’t seen any treatment
for it. So she was referred to a clinical psychologist for emotional support and counseling
regarding her parents’ death and current relationship problems. Also, she is unemployed and
has no contact with the father of the child, so she has been advised to apply for single mother
benefits.

During hospitalization, Ms. Ray and her baby have been progressing well. However, she is
breastfeeding with hesitation and prefers to change into bottle feeding. It would be most
appreciated if you could provide the necessary accommodations and support to Ms. Ray and
her baby. Liaising with the local Maternal Health Service for ongoing post-natal monitoring is
important.

If you have any questions, please contact me.

Yours faithfully,

Ward Nurse

Cooperation between emergency shelters and local health services ensures comprehensive support for new mothers like Ms. Riya Ray, encompassing housing, health, and psychological needs. This partnership facilitates access to integrated care, optimizing resource allocation to address immediate needs, offering post-natal monitoring, and providing a foundation for long-term stability and well-being .

Untreated depression in Ms. Riya Ray could affect her ability to bond with her child and perform maternal duties effectively. Symptoms such as lethargy, emotional withdrawal, or anxiety may impact her responsiveness and proactive caregiving, potentially affecting the child's development. Access to psychological support is essential to mitigate these risks and support a healthy mother-infant attachment .

Ms. Riya Ray's situation exemplifies how lack of familial and social support can exacerbate psychological distress in new mothers. With her parents deceased, her sister overseas, and an abusive partner, Ms. Ray experiences isolation. These stressors, combined with untreated depression from past trauma, increase her vulnerability during the postpartum period, highlighting the necessity for psychological and social interventions .

As a single mother, Ms. Riya Ray can apply for single mother benefits to assist financially since she is unemployed. She can access emergency accommodation and support services, including maternal health services for post-natal monitoring. Psychological counseling and emotional support are also prescribed to help manage her depression and relationship issues .

Maternal health services are crucial for Ms. Riya Ray, providing ongoing post-natal monitoring essential for her and her newborn's health. These services help manage post-partum changes, offer guidance on breastfeeding versus bottle feeding, and support her psychological needs. Given her isolation and stress, these health services offer vital continuity of care and assist in addressing her physical and emotional recovery .

Transitioning from breastfeeding to bottle feeding can significantly impact Ms. Ray's baby in terms of nutrition and bonding. This decision reflects her comfort and convenience, potentially influenced by stress or personal preference. Consulting with maternal health services ensures this shift supports the baby's health and Ms. Ray's emotional well-being, balancing nutritional needs with maternal comfort .

The relationship between Ms. Riya Ray and Anton Campbell negatively impacts her mental health and well-being. Mr. Campbell's verbal abuse contributes to an unsafe environment, discouraging her from staying with him. This toxic dynamic likely heightens her stress and amplifies existing depression, underlying her need for psychological counseling and a secure environment for her and her child .

Ms. Riya Ray's need for emergency accommodation and support services stems from several factors: the recent delivery of her first child, lack of local family support due to her parents' death and her sister living overseas, an abusive relationship with her boyfriend, unemployment, and the absence of contact with the child's father. Additionally, she requires emotional support for her depression, which has been untreated since her parents' accident 18 months ago .

The absence of immediate family critically weakens Ms. Riya Ray's support network, leaving her without practical and emotional support during the demanding post-natal period. Her sister's distant location and her aunt's geographic separation exacerbate her isolation, emphasizing her need for external social services to fill the gap traditionally covered by family .

Emergency accommodation provides a safe and stable environment for Ms. Riya Ray and her newborn, essential for their well-being following hospital discharge. It shields them from the abusive atmosphere with her boyfriend, offers a controlled setting conducive to health and recovery, and allows access to community support services crucial for early motherhood .
